I suffer from GAD and mild OCD. I've taken Paxil in the past with great success but stopped due to weight gain. I've since taken Zoloft and Lexapro with no success. I'm currently on 75/mg Effexor which is minimally effective. I'm afraid to increase the Effexor. Already if I forget a pill, I get terribly sick to my stomach. I'm considering going back on Paxil but am hesitant b/c of the weight gain and lethargy. Anybody had great success with Paxil and found anything else that was equally effective?
Thanks for your input.

Yes i have had great success with paxil but stopped for the same reason as yourself. How long were you on Zoloft for and did it just "not work" or side effect problems or what?

I was only on it for a only short time (about 2 weeks) but stopped due to sexual side effects.

Did you expierence more sexual side effects from Zoloft than Paxil? Mine seems to be the opposite

Okay too much emphasis on sex. If you feel better that's what's important. The rest can come later. Fondly, Phillipa

Obviously, if someone is suicidal, immediate help is pretty imperative. What I've experienced, though, even when somewhat suicidal, is quite different: I've responded to some extent to almost all the anti-depressants I've tried -- but those things like anorgasmia, weight gain, fatigue, sedation, even constipation, have been enough to bring on daily distress that really can be as bad as the depression itself for me. At this point, I won't even consider a medication that's going to cause that much dysfunction in my life, unless I know it's going to be temporary. And I don't think I can be temporarily medicated. I think this is probably it for me. So, it's got to be good. I've got to be able to live as normal a life as I can. And that means things like orgasm.
Differing views, I guess...

You're right Racer it's a matter of differing views. To me sex isn't that important but being able to do the things that make me feel good like watching a sunset or walking or helping others give me as much pleasure as sex. And then you have to define sex. I prefer cuddling any day of the week. I received an E-mail the other night from a poster [male] that was letting off steam. It seems he feels the same way I do that too many people put too much emphasis on orgasism [his words] instead of feeling good. So I guess we're all different but that's not bad. Just as long as we support each other that's what's important to me. Fondly, Phillipa

2 weeks is a very short time to decide whether an SSRI like Paxil is working or not. They say it takes 6-8 weeks to know for sure. How long did you try your other antidepressants? If you haven't been on Effexor veyr long, you might consider trying it a little longer and things might work out.
That said, if you go back to Paxil and find that you have the same side effects, you can take just a little Wellbutrin and that sometimes helps. I took Paxil for a while and I needed to take a very high dose to take care of my anxiety, but doing that made me soooo sleepy. So, I added some WB and that seemed to help. Of course I never found paxil to help my depression 100%.
Also, for some people the lethargy wears off after a while.
Best,
EE
