A friend of mine experienced an immediate antidepressant effect from even low dosages of Seroquel when it was mixed with Wellbutrin. She has settled on Seroquel 700mg + Wellbutrin 300mg + Lamictal 150mg and is doing quite well. Seroquel does not seem to poop-out for her. She has been on it for 2 years.

> bpsIts not an antidepressant per say. Its an atypical antipsychotic. That being said, it is often used with antidepressant as an augmenting agent. It also has the benefit of taking care of sleep disturbances. Just after you take them, antipsychotics are extremely sedating and thus you have non problem falling assleep.

It does seem to have some antidepressant properties due to its activity at the 5-ht1a receptor.
I have taken all three of the newer AP's. Zyprexa was neutral, risperdal made me much more depressed, but seroquel had a moderate AD effect in me.

Thanx for the replies,
That big study recently released reported that seroquel was equivalent to the zyprexa-prozac combo.. I read on www.bipolarnews.org that seroquel antidepressant effects mabye due to its modulation of Brain derived neutrophic factor (BNDF)... whatever that means! but thats interesting that people are reporting an antidepressant effect from seroquel..

BDNF, has been proposed to be the end target for antidepressant drugs. It is basically a neurotrophic factor that promotes neurogenesis. Neurogenesis (new brain cell growth) is thought to be necessry for an AD to work.

Hey Link,
One of my best friends did his fourth year thesis on BDNF and also bragged about how it was the end-factor for many psychotropic drugs... I can't wait to go through a good trial of seroquel.. but the problem is that my current pdoc doesnt care much for research results, he claims it doesnt apply to me (a difficult-to-treat case)... so I'm going to have a hard time trying to persuade him to let me try seroquel..

You're in the same boat as me. Lots of good ideas, but no doctor who can make them a reality for you.

And Link you deserve a good doctor. Any dr worth his salt would be grateful for a patient like you, instead of spending, how many minutes was it, 7.5 or was it 10? With my nutritional doctor I spent 2 hours with him last time, of course that cost me, but really you could go to town with him. And he would love it. He said that he would have to cut down from 3 patients a day to 2!!

Seroquel seems to have an antidepressant effect for me, but only combined with lithium. Neither one of them alone had any AD effect at all, but together they do.I don't see what the big deal is for your doctor. I could understand it if was a highly risky drug or something, but what the hell does he care if you swap one antipsychotic for another (you're on Zyprexa right?)? I know he said he wanted you to try your current drugs longer, which makes some sense. But it seems like in a couple more weeks he should let you switch. It sucks that doctors have that kind of power and we can't just do what we want! I want to try Dexedrine but I don't know if my doctor is going to let me because I had sort of a bad reaction to Adderall.
I think Seroquel is way better than Zyprexa.
