Best SSRI for OCD

Posted by michael20073 on May 31, 2005, at 22:00:21

Going back to see my doctor this week after having my first session with a CBT specialist. It seems as if they ask me which one I would like to try next (kinda disturbing really), anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on which SSRI works the best for OCD?

I'll second that/fluvoxamine aka Luvox is awesome for OCD and is the only SSRI that helped me.

None of the SSRI's have helped my OCD.

Clomipramine at the low dose I am on is not reallyd oing anything but it is helping my anxiety. Im hoping it will help my OCD once I get up to 150-200mg.

Take care

Do you recall if you got any response on a low dose, say 50mg?

I would argue there is no 'best'. one person's best is another one's poison. just try the one your pdoc recommends and see. if that's a bust, move on to the next.

Darn! I keep forgetting how much luvox helped me. I did get up to 250mg the first time. Then that idiot pdoc dropped it down to 50mg. Said he had it high cause I was in the hospital. Forgot he raised it by 50mg after discharge. Then he decided to switch I don't know why. After that he wanted me in a Celexa trial and l month of that was all i could take. After that I tried again with another pdoc and got up to 200mg and it pooped out. Every time I read a post I think of that pdoc and how he ruined my life because i thought he was a God. Fondly, Phillipa

I remember reading the book "Stop Obsessing!: How to Overcome Your Obsessions and Compulsions" by Edna B. Foa and Reid Wilson. There was a chapter on the meds available at the time of the publication of this book that suggested Prozac, based on some study somebody had conducted, reduced roughly 30% of the obsessive-compulsive symptoms of patients treated with the drug. Paxil was close behind at 29%, followed by Zoloft at 28% and Luvox at 23%. I was surprised to see Luvox come in last, considering it seems to be the "gold standard" as far as treating OCD. That is, next to Anafranil...the particular study in the aforementioned book reported that patients that were given Anafranil reported a 38% reduction in symptoms. Anafranil's a tricyclic antidepressant though, as opposed to an SSRI...but you guys already know that. And remember...EVERYONE'S DIFFERENT. Don't give up just because you don't see an improvement with one particular medication, no matter how effective it's supposed to be.
