Hi. I am looking for some thoughts...
I have been on some form of medication for most of the last 7 years. Most recently I was taking effexxor and wellbutrin from about 8/01 to 12/04. I started to realize the medication was doing weird things to me, was diagnosed with fibromayalgia, and when a doctor tried to increase the dose, i noticed everything got worse. Yet, going off effexor was a nightmare. And, admittedly I didn’t really taper much because I only had so many pills. That was January. I have since gained a lot of weight. The last few months have been a blur, but at some point I decided wellbutrin was the cause of this (when I first went on effexor I actually lost weight..). So I stopped taking welbutrin and bought a bunch of books on amino acids, etc. I thought they were helping to some degree. I've slowly made a few strides. But, then this weekend I totally broke down. I now can barely function. I had a friend call me Monday night and we had a long chat about it. Obviously, I need to go back on something. ..
Thing is, I don’t have a psych here. I am looking for a decent one who takes my insurance and thus far, the soonest apt I can get is June 6. I know I can’t continue like this. I have started taking the welbutrin again. But, I saw somewhere on this board that often they don’t work the second time around? Should I once again add the effexxor, thinking perhaps doing that might relieve all the bloating?

I think returning to an antidepressant makes sense. For what it's worth, I don't think the risk of Wellbutrin losing its effectiveness is as high as for the SSRIs or Effexor. If you begin with Wellbutrin, you can use it as a base from which to add other medications. Wellbutrin is almost like the "universal adjunct" that mixes pretty well with just about anything, including MAOIs. If Effexor has since lost its effectiveness, or you think it might have been making the fibromyalgia worse, I think Lexapro might be a good drug to try. Perhaps Cymbalta. Cymbalta has been shown in some studies to improve the symptoms of fibromyalgia, particularly in women.
Good luck.

Have you tried to use some of the Bach flower essences to help manage things while you decrease your meds? Thay can be a big help. Even just the Rescue Remedy which is easily available can get you thru the day. You can look into them online.

Ive been wondering about wellbutrin and stopping and starting and I think it seems to still be working for me, alhtough I never stopped for 4 months. But I did lower it about 7 or 8 months ago, cant remember exactly and since then I have gained weight. I didnt know why but it could have something to do with wellbutrin and its appetite suppressant effects and then stopping it has a rebound effect??
I think starting wellbutrin again would be worth a try, what dose are you starting at?Rain

Scott, When I took cymbalta the same time you did I didn't realize it was doing anything for me. But after I stopped it all my aches and pains came back. So I guess it takes away pain. Fondly, Phillipa
