Help - No Sleep, ... ED, others :( Thank you

Posted by temoigneur on May 27, 2005, at 0:08:24

This was paste from a letter I sent to a friend, I can't sleep, never have been able to on SSRI's, but Prozac, not the others, work otherwise brilliantly, initially.....( I'm going to ask if I can try augmenting with bromocriptine, if it poops out., any suggestions, xyrem, barbituates, dexedrine, (causes sedation for me but don't know about the quality of sleep I'd get.) Any Suggestions much appreciated.

.. Last night I didn't sleep till 4:00, and then only for 2 hrs. I'm writing you because I know you've tried so many things, including barbituates, and was wondering if you might be able to give me any information on them, or xyrem maybe. I was even wondering about dexedrine, as it makes me drowsy, but the pharmacist said it wouldn't be likely to give me a good quality sleep. Is it ever effective to alternate between ambien and zopiclone? I have tolerance to immovane - Ahhhh I just want to kill something - and I'm sedated!!!! So it's basically Prozac induced insomnia, on just tca, I have a low level, mind numbing euphoria.

The Good news, is that on the first of June, I'm FINALLY, seeing a psychiatrist, who's purpoted to be good - (I don't have the nerve to be skeptical.... consciously:) Anyway, I'm desperately hoping he'll look at my sordid record, and be willing to try something that may have promise.

Thank you

Dear Ben,

What dose of fluoxetine and clomipramine are you on at the moment? How is your OCD? Do you still feel apathitic during the day?

>Is it ever effective to alternate between ambien and zopiclone? I have tolerance to immovane - Ahhhh

How tolerant are you to Ambien?

>The Good news, is that on the first of June, I'm FINALLY, seeing a psychiatrist, who's purpoted to be good....

:-)

Kind regards,
Ed.

Hi Ed,

I'm on 50mg fluoxetine and 30mg clomipramine. My OCD remains quite well controlled. Re: apathy, I just started a course at college, and have felt sufficiently motivated and alert to do this one class, that was for the first few days, while I was sleeping well with immovane.

Now I don't know if it's 3 x 7.5 mg/day of immovane building up, and sedating me, or it's just stopped working, or if it's that I don't want to face a reality that not everyone is wired for science, and this is adding to the stress. I don't know. On that combination, I was still definately not myself, but while I was 'sleeping' I was definately more alert, motivated etc. . enough that I was happy to be doing the biology class. The GP I'm seeing recommends we slowly reduce the clomipramine, but of course this will be impossible if the insomnia isn't resolved. I have my first appt. with the psychiatrist on June 1st.

Insomnia has always been the cheif concern with SSRI's for me- I don't know whether the SSRI's stop working, the sleeping pills stop working, orthe sleeping pills build up to sedating levels..

I do know, that for four months, when I first started prozac years ago, and had never before taken Immovane, I felt terrific. Since then, they're have been challenges

I have been swimming x3/week, I don't know whether exercise make a significant enough difference to make it worthwhile with this severity of insomnia

I've never tried Ambien, is it very different from zopiclone? It's not avail. in Canada, but I might be able to get it via special access.

Hi Ben,

>I'm on 50mg fluoxetine and 30mg clomipramine.

Do you think you might sleep better if you decreased the fluoxetine and increase the clomipramine?

AFAIK, zolpidem (Ambien) *is* available in Canada. I think the Canadian brand name is Stilnox. Maxime will correct me if I'm wrong :-)

Kind regards,
Ed.
