I just started parnate today. I'm quite paranoid about the diet restrictions already. Some things I'd like to keep eating are tofu, soy based veggie burgers and supplements, and whey protein... I'm told to avoid soy products and protein supplements, and the veggie burgers and the like probably contain yeast extract too. Anyone think some of these things are ok? Hmm, I'm not sure what I am suppose to eat for protein if they are not. I'm a veggitarian and enjoy bodybuilding so have always eaten really high amounts of these things. I guess I have to give up the bodybuilding.
I'm also unsure about taking clonazepam (klonopin) as needed for my social anxiety while on parnate. Seems like I got to be really careful about anything I put in my body.
Any thoughts would be great.

> -supermanHi,
buy BP measure and see how you react to small amounts of the resctricted food. This way I excluded only beer and red wine from my diet while I was on Parnate.

Hello. I am vegetarian and I just restarted Parnate. I was off it for 5 months. But I was taking 80-100 mg depending on how I was doing. Plus I take a stimulant with it!
I have a high tolerance for tyramine which is why I was able to eat just about anything I wanted without a reaction ... even red wine.
Tofu is okay because it's not fermented ( I don't know if it's on the list). Tempeh, fermented tofu, might cause problems but didn't for me. You can try the food in small amounts and see how it goes. The one thing I couldn't tolerate was soy sauce. But I use Bragg Amino Acid sauce which you can use to replace tamari or soy sauce in recipes.
Don't be paranoid just cautious. Always try to the new food at home.
Do you have an emergency of any sort to take should your BP spike? Your doctor should prescribe something for you.
I hope this eases your mind.

If the protein supplement contained high doses of free form amino acids it might have an impact. Is it the tryptophan, phenylalanine, tyrosine there you might worry about? Some of those things must be alright, but where's the limit. They did experiments decades ago supplementing MAOIs with tryptophan, which made them more potent. Are there protein powders that don't contain free form aminos, just hydrolized protein (whatever that is).

> -supermanMan of steele, best thing to do is as ur doing,ur new to it so u cant listen to everyone, everyone has their own dos and donts.Just at the beginigng keep an eye on urself as u beging to break the no no barriaer and find out what your essential no nos are.
For me,just soy sauce.I just had a huge HUGE pizza pie for dinner yummm and no interaction.I also have the luxury of OCCASIONALY and i say this so strictly of enjoying a beer now and then.
I also work out and psst heres a secret,i read somewhere only because of obvious results being seen that parnate effects gh,i on one hand dont have the energy for the painful workouts any longer however on the other hand im getting bigger and bigger,my p-doc even joked about it and asked who did i eat on my way in.Liquid deprenyl was known to have gh properties, and i beieve parnate does too.
Dont dream of stopping, just cut back a little on the working out and diet, and i promise you will end up with a very short no no list of ur own.
As far as klonopin goes, god u know how many sleepless nights caused by parnate klonopin rescued, unless there are any ojections here id have to say klonopin should be the LEAST LEAS LEAST of you concerns with parnate.
I even had trouble with neurontion and heavy sweating and all it took to get over that was a spacing off the dose, its a shame of the scare tactic,so many people are scared to death of this life SAVING medication.
Superman this is not krptytonite, you will not be altering ur life hardly at all, just be weary until you feel u know the med well and how it feels in ur body, this should take 2 weeks to a month good luck and welcome to the parnate group.

I was also very cautious first years I was on MAOI's- pre internet! I finally figured out that actually nothing bothered me....but I wasnt stupid. Only small amounts of prohibited foods, and always carried BP med just in case. I think the trickest can be when you are out and maybe having some wine or beer, and foods that may be prohibited without knowing it. Soooo, I agree I think it's almost safer to try small amounts of foods and see if your BP reacts.
Believe me, if they work well the MAOI's are definitly worth any inconvenience.

Thanks everyone for sharing. I'm going to talk to my doctor about something for emergencies. You all helped ease my mind.
I'm wondering how long it took those who have taken parnate to notice its effects?? And what symptoms did it help with?? I think my problems are rejection sensitivity, low motivation, and general worry and low mood.
Thanks again everyone

I felt a difference at 40 mg. I had more energy. I tried different dosages (going as high as 120) but anywhere from 80-100 mg works best for me.
I think it will help with all your symptoms. The rejection sensitivity is the only one I am not sure about. I have the same problem. But I have very low self esteem and I don't think a pill is going to help that. I think psychotherapy would be better. At the same time, if you are feeling better you might not be so sensitive, you might be able to be more positive in general.
Keep us posted on the changes you notice.

Here is the best soy and tamari sauce replacement you can buy. It's yummy and won't interact with your MAOI
