Why do so many people have so much success with Klonopin? Is it different than the other benzo's? I see on several sites about Social Phobia listing treatments and the only benzo they list is Klonopin. They also list Nardil but thats an MAOI. What is so different about Klonopin ---what sets it apart chemical wise. I Know it is an anticonvulsant, but isnt Tranxene and a few others also indicated for seizures. I take Klonopin at 2mgs daily and it works wonders for my anxiety where other meds didnt. Anyone have any input. Is Klonopin just so much more superior than all the others?

Hi,
>I see on several sites about Social Phobia listing treatments and the only benzo they list is Klonopin.
Clonazepam has been studied in social phobia whereas the other benzos have not.
>I Know it is an anticonvulsant, but isnt Tranxene and a few others also indicated for seizures.
Valium, Ativan, Tranxene, Frisium.... all are powerful anti-convulsants. In fact, all of the commonly used benzos are probably anti-convulsants.
>Is Klonopin just so much more superior than all the others?
I think it's more a case of Klonopin being the current fashion!

The biggest difference between the benzos is the half-lives. Valium has the longest thus less interdose withdrawals, in other words you can miss a dose and not freak once it is well in your system. Hard to get presribed in the U.S. though as it has a rep as a drug of abuse. Also, Klonopin withdrawals seem to be particularly ugly if you decide to come off them. Why I think is a mystery.

Doctors prefer clonazepam (Klonopin) because there`s no sudden "kick-in" and "wear-off" and thus less likely to be abused. Safer (for them). (Unlike Xanax, famously abused by Dubya`s niece, who forged a prescription for it.) Whether it (clonazepam) does anything I don`t know. I take it, but I really haven`t a clue whether it does anything, or my system has just gotten used to it. I`m still incredibly anxious, but I`m afraid to wean off for fear I`d be even worse. Cecilia

.5mgs Klo=10mgs of Diazapam, in other words it has 20x the Gaba binding capacity of Diazepam.

Even if it was true (20x more - where did you read it???) it means nothing. .5mg Klonopin=10 mgs Diazepam have pretty much the equivalent mode of action.

The thing that Klonopin is only 0,5 and Diazepam 20 (this would be actually 40x in your calculations) doesnt necessarily mean that binbing to GABA receptors is 20 or 40x more. Just that Diazepam has higher mg per dose and thats all. Nothing else. If you disagree please post some Pubmed studies or something.

CeciliaGood thinking. Last time I came off Klonopin, my mind was going 1000 miles an hour, walls were breathing, major dr. First ER gave me a shot of antihistamine and charged me $1000. Second one told me to go home and take the meds. May be time for a dose increase. Or you can swtich to valium and wean off ever so slowly like the Ashton Manual suggests. But many of these folks spend a year or more tapering then a year or a multiple thereof getting somewhere near normal again. Most seems to not have to work, have supporters or govt checks. Yet many want to do this, am not here to discourage it.

I do the exact same thing. I take 2mg clonazepam, it does nothing for my anxiety but i still take it because of fear of withdrawals....

Why not increase your dose? Many have to do this periodically.

>I went as far as 10mg of clonazepam. Still does nothing. I have no clue why, because 3mg Xanax works fantastically except short half-life.

Klonopin is a benzo as all other benzos with little differences.
They all have antiseizures properties, but perhaps accidentally a University published some studies that clonazepam could be good for panic. There are other benzos with longer half-lifes (pharmacokinetics)and you could therefore also say there is no abuse potential and it could be good for social phobia and panic. In the benzo substance class are some minor differences in the sideeffect profile. This is because the benzos have very little differences in structure and because most benzos are highly metabolized by the liver, the metabolites could have different effects. And I would be interested which sideffect profile suits me the best.

Hi all!
If you take a normal xanax (3mg) occasionally, you have a high peak plasma level in your blood and then you will feel some less anxiety. Clonazepam is not the best drug to use occasionally and it takes some time to have the full effect of a steady dosage. Klonopin could have some depressant properties because it has influence on serotonin transmission. Xanax is said, has some antidepressant action. I can not explain pharmacologically.
I personally have good results in occasional use with 2mg Klonopin 1-1.5 befor stressfull events.
It resembles to wine without the euphoric effect. It only has an euphoric effect for me when i feel that i am almost anxiety free.
Wine is the best "benzo" i have ever taken and i use it only in little dosages in the evening. Why you dont try the xanax xr version?
Kind regards
sdb

1.too expensive
2.doesn't work that well (like a totally diff drug)
3.there are no 3 or 4mg xanax-xr versions ;)

prazepam would be a similar alternative to alprazolam (Xanax). It has antidepressant actions like alprazolam.

very cheap and long acting drug
I will perhaps try also.
