I am currently on Zoloft/Remeron, which I like, excepting for the 'spaciness' (and cost) that comes it. I am still ruminating (I take the Zoloft for OCD), yet it is about real life situations, as opposed to irrational, intrusive thoughts, as it was before. Maxime recommends Anafranil instead of the combo I am on. She claims that there is less weight gain with it than with Remeron. Anyone else have opinions about her suggestion?

Here comes a biased opinion---I very much like clomipramine!! It unfortunately pooped out on me, but when it worked it worked well for anxiety and depression. It does have a little weight gain side effect, but I think less so than others...
I say biased opinion because some people do have other bothersome side effects. Especially if you have low blood pressure to begin with, you can easily develop orthostatic hypotension and resultant dizziness when you stand up. Others complain of tiredness.
For me, I only had some weight gain--it seems others can keep it to a minimum with dieting (I had no room to diet--I already eat too little). So for me it was like taking candy. I seem to do very well on TCAs, better than SSRIs. My opinion is that SSRIs are *too* clean--acting only on one neurotransmitter. Also some of Remerons actionis 5ht2a antagonism--clomipramine also has 5ht2a antagonism--I believe this is the key element in some anxieties...

I don't have OCD but I took it for Anxiety, Social anxiety and depression.I think Clomipramine is a good drug, it certainly is very effective for anxiety.
Unfortunatly it comes with many side effects.
I experienced extreme daytime sedation to begin with, although it did get better. I also had a very dry mouth which didn't get better. As to weight gain I found Clomipramine to be bad in terms of weight gain, I was only on it for a few months and I gained a lot of weight which I still haven't lost:(
I think it also made me a bit tired during the day.
To conclude I think it is a very effective drug, if you can tolerate it!

I know a lot of other people do have more trouble with clomipramine than I encountered. And I do agree, weight can be an issue...to me it seemed as though the weight does not appear immediately, but rather over time is insidiously creeps up..
it did help me quite a bit with anxiety and obsessive ruminations..I now am using Luvox and Abilify for the anxiety component of my difficulties. Both in combination seem to give me relief.
This is the end of the thread.
