Posted by mmcconathy on March 20, 2005, at 13:55:34

I hate anxiety meds, Klonopin, Ativan, they suck.

During a blitz attack, i cant describe to my psychiatrist what happens becuase its soo much, i studder, he blows me off.

I dont want to waste time taking meds.

Is Alcohol really an effective, of course used stably, unlike bringe drinkers.

What do you think

I think alcohol is certainly good for acute anxiety however for me, it's totally not worth it since I feel that the rebound anxiety with alcohol use is worse than most other things

Matthew,

First of all, you are a minor and, unless you plan to raid your parents' liquor cabinet or go "fishing" for booze outside the store, you don't and shouldn't have access to alcohol. I used alcohol for years (from the age of about 15) to overcome my anxiety, including social anxiety. I don't drink anymore. Trust me, it is not the answer you are looking for, so don't even think about going there. It can turn into a horrible addiction, and the black-outs, the puking, the hangovers, etc. that come with it are not pleasant. And, neither is the withdrawal if you become addicted/dependent.

If you are having trouble communicating with your pdoc, try writing things down as they happen then you can show that to the pdoc to avoid getting all tongue-tied, etc. when you are talking to him. Also, are you still in therapy? You should be talking to your therapist about techniques to help you deal with and overcome or eliminate your anxiety, etc. You can also look into finding an ADD coach to help you in that area.

no, dont drink.

Just wondering when 21 comes around.

Im really putting out anger becuase these medications are not working, Klonopin, 1mg 3X daily, does not make that sharp feeling in your stomache go away, mind dulling too.

I need a new mind.

If you drink you could become an alchoholic. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Matt,

To be honest, when my anxiety was bad, I tried alcohol and it didn't help at all, if anything it made my feel worse. If I drink when I'm anxious it makes me feel sick and sort of hypoglycemic.

Geez, you have to be 21 to drink in Texas? We start younger here!

Ed.

Hi Matt,
It seems like you already figured it out, but just to add...

Alcohol initially acts as a stimulant. When you drink more, it then acts as a depressant to your nervous system. And if alcoholism runs in your family, as it seems it does, as a male, you have a much higher risk of addiction. Best to stay away. And alcohol is a drug just as prescribed drugs are. It's just not a controlled substance. But it affects the brain just the same.

I want you to live long and prosper, too. So take care of yourself. Check out some healthy ways of relaxing, like yoga, exercise, meditation, spending time in nature.

Actually, you should try karate. I met a karate instructor who works with ADD folks, and she swears she sees tremendous improvement. She says there are studies out there to back this up, but I have not looked for them. Good luck!

Oh Matt,
I hate to see you are still doing so badly.

I really wish you would consider hospitalization until you can feel a bit more stable. Besides the food, the people, and the walls, it's really not all that bad there. lol

I hope you can find your way to freedom and healing soon..
