Okay, so I am doing very badly here. I am thinking that the chances of my getting into that DBS study are slim, but I will of course wait.
But if I don't ... then what.
Has anyone here had ECT? Did you then continue with meds afterwards? Are you glad you made the choice to have the ECT?

The most studied is ECT followed by a combination of lithium and nortriptaline.

I thought you were in the DBS study? I really hope you do get in it sounded better than ECT after I read your explanation of how it works. Fondly, Phillipa

ECT is essentially a frontal lobotomy... I stongly recommend not seeking ECT treatment for depression. I wish you the best of luck, but I truly think ECT is the last resort for anyone.

My doctor made a referral for the DBS study ... it doesn't mean I am going to get in. In fact, because of all the media attention everyone has been calling these people.
I am running out of time and I have no hope.

There is always hope. You haven't been disapproved for the study yet. Keep letting your pdoc know how you feel, that you are hopeless, then maybe he can push for you harder. If I could I would. Fondly, Phillipa

Hello,
>I have no hope.
There are other treatments abroad. I bet you haven't tried the French antidepressant, tianeptine (Stablon).

ECT is far less drastic than a frontal lobotomy.
Many people have ECT and go back to work shortly after. Work is not possable after a frontal lobotomy.

I had ECT several years ago, after trying many drugs that had no effect. I debated about having it done, and did lots of research. Of course, everyone reacts differently to the entire procedure - but it seems like it's a viable treatment for many.
I did have some memory loss surrounding those weeks. Other than that, it wasn't too unpleasant. Unfortunately, the ECT did nothing to alleviate my depression. However, as I mentioned above...everyone reacts differently to the procedure and what didn't work for me might work wonders for someone else. It was the best option at the time and I don't regret trying it. I hope you find what you need - soon!

Yes. I had a course of 15 treatments in 1991. They didn't help.

I don't remember.

Maxime,
THe new people magazine has an article on ECT-- apparently the plus size model, Emme's husband, had serious depression (he tried to commit suicide) and had great success with it. I think I read he had 7 treatments with it.

You mean more voltage will be shot through my brain? Not quite what I want ...
Are you taking about the Transcranial Nerve Stimulation that is done with a magnet?
I will look for the People Magazine article ...
Thanks.

I've passed the phone interviews for a TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) trial and have an appt for next week. Depending on the part of the country you are in maybe you can find one?
