hey! Opening up the capsule may or may not do anything...some XR formulas also involve altering the drug itself (like Ritalin LA)...basically, they're trying to both maximize the XR action AND prevent drug abuse. Adderall may or may not do that...at any rate, the most you could expect would be a more immediate "hit" of adderall, which could last anywhere from 7-10 hours, depending on your reaction to it. Personally, I like the immediate-release Adderall (available as generic, btw) much more than the XR...the initial impact takes a little getting used to, but it seems to work better (although it doesn't last as long). Good luck.

I know of a doctor who actually recommended this to his patients. Actually he wrote an article that was given to me by my doc. I called his phone (it was on the article) and to my surprise he actually answered himself! He talked to me for a few minutes. He says that FDA says not to do it, but he tells his patients to do it so to get an accurate dosage. In other words, he does not have them open the capsule to take the whole thing.
If the XR isn't working maybe you should try the regular tablets. Then you can take it throughout the day in small doses to get a better effect.
One thing I have learned from people on this board and my doc....Adderall works better when you take it as little as possible. He told me that is the only way to keep one step ahead of tolerance. It does suck, but I would rather have a few days where the Adderall works perfect, as opposed to everyday with minimal performance. The drug holidays really do work.

Thanks Guys---- How can I get my Doc to give me the regular adderall instead of xr? The xr just doesn't feel right, all of a sudden i'll be up and then down and it does that all day. I am on 10 mg and i already feel tollerant to that but i just think that is because it is the XR. I would rather just take the tablets when ever i need them instead of in the moring and be like a rollar coaster all day.

i would just be honest and tell him or her that the xr just doesn't work for you. have you tried the immediate release and know how it's supposed to feel? the other thought is that maybe adderall just isn't your drug? anyway, when xanax xr came out, my drs and i were all excited to try it. i took xanax four times a day, and that involved a lot of ups and downs and psychological dependence. i tried xanax xr, and i just couldn't feel it working. it wasn't nearly as potent and effective. could be the same for you and adderall.
the other thing i would mention is the cost. i don't know whether your insurnace covers adderall xr, but in any case, it's a lot more expensive than the regular, which is available as a generic. few doctors can argue with a reason like this since they're not the ones shelling out good money for the pills.
good luck!
