Please help

Posted by draisy on March 14, 2005, at 17:46:32

I'm going to the dr tomorrow.

can anyone please name some anti-depres/anxieties that don't cause weight gain (i cannot take a drug with this side effect)

*and that don't cause seizures (I have already had a seizure on a high doose of wellbutrin)?

I would like to go in with some drugs i know about instead of him not just throwing something at me.

thanks a million!!

Geodon is an AP with no weight gain, it is also good for anxiety. Celexa is an AD with no weight gain, does nothing much for anxiety, but also does not cause any. Lamictal, mood stabilizer, might help with anxiety, no weight.

Sebastian--I thought that Celexa was supposed to be effective for GAD and OCD? I've been on it for a very long time with good results in both aspects, although it doesn't seem to be working so well at the moment. In fact, I'm beginning to think that it won't work at all for me any more. But in the beginning, it was great. Anyway, just curious.

here's what i've compiled so far for anti-deps/anxiety meds that DON'T cause weight gain.

i'm leaving out wellbutrin because of the seizure though i miss wellbutrin SOOO much!

Trileptal
Strattera
Parnate
Topomax
Cymbalta
Lamictal
Geodon
Topiramate
Prozac

can anyone share their experience with the drugs, side effects and all?

Thanks

No wt gain from luvox either. And maybe my chemistry is different, but I had no wt gain from paxil either. Now, the remeron is a different story! Fondly, Phillipa

This is years ago, but I gained on celexa (didn't try lexapro but presume effects would be similar).

I lost a lot of weight on Prozac initially, but after several months gained. I think there are some studies out there that suggest the early view that weight gain was dominant weren't borne out over time, but don't quote me.

I tend to be a gainer though!

Good luck to you.

There's a thread about Cymbalta - check the past threads - and I think a lot of people mentioned weight gain. My pdoc wants me to try it, but I am afraid of that side effect.

trileptal seems to be the best bet then.

topomax causes seizures also so if you can't do wellbutrin for that reason i don't think you can do topomax either.

i was wondering though, trileptal is an anti-seizure? do you think you could take trileptal with a low does of wellbutrin to curb the seizure effect and not get the weight gain effect?

I think your level of anxiety plays a part too. If you are very anxious you are probably more active, shaking a foot, picking, getting up, sitting down, etc. I excercised excessively when my anxiety was sky high. So, I didn't gain wt. Fondly, Phillipa

Hey draisy,

I've read in various places that Prozac -- even in the long term -- can be a crap-shoot in terms of wieght gain. Some people gain a lot. Some people gain nothing. (Or maybe lose a little bit and then stabilize.)

One med not on your list that seems to be pretty weight neutral is Serzone (nefazodone). The one issue with this drug is a *very* rare chance of liver failure, which means getting your liver (ALT) tested every so often (fairly frequently at first). The other issue, of course, is that as with any drug it might not work. (It was a complete bust for me, but I lost weight and had a fantastic libido -- the other big concern for me with ADs.)

Hope this helps. Good luck!

hey, thanks. actually the first SSRI i ever tried was Serzone and i went off it after three days because all i did was sleep and put on weight (even in the few days). it also made me hungry.

i walk my dog an hour a day and eat pretty well and won't take a drug that forces me to go to a gym.

I think women always should feel sexy and great about themselves and weight gain with sexual side effects are as damaging psychologically as anything that can cause a depression bad enough that you need to take the meds in the first place.

that's my thing anyway. won't take stuff that mess with what's left of my feel-goods.

Wierd how different meds effect different people. I basically couldn't sleep, and lost my appetite for a long while.

Anyway, women or men, I think that it's such a shame that so many of these drugs rob us of our well-kept bodies and our libido/sexual function. The really frustrating thing for me is that the meds that allow me to feel good about my body and sex life haven't done squat for my over-arching sense of well-being. Hopefully there's something out there for each of us.

I don't know if this was mentioned up in the list at all, but low-dose selegiline (often combined with DL-phenylalanine) can act as an AD for some. For others, the low-dose route doesn't work. At the low doses (I don't know about higher) Selegiline seems to be weight neutral and pro-libido, plus no dietary restrictions.

You might have to do some work to convince your doctor to give it a shot, since it's tecnically only FDA-approved for Parkinsons. But it might be worth a shot, since it is used in other countries as an antidepressant.

I think my pdoc is actually down with it, so it could well be my next foray into the AD world.

Best,
cache-monkey
