anyone use dipenhdrymine (sp?) for anxiety? i don't want to encourage self-medication, but as some seem to be helped by it for Benzo induced mania i was wondering if anyone had any medical info on its use for things other than insomnia or allergies.

I know this.. Once when I was having a full blown attack and called my doctor for help ( at 1 a.m. in the morning- I am sure she appreciated that!), she said, " Go see if you have any benadryl in your cabinet and if you do, take it."So I did and it knocked me out and I fell asleep.
So, I suppose it can help. It definitely has a calming effect.

I've read and heard that you can use it. However, it can have a rebound effect as well so you might want to watch out for that. Have you tried other meds for anxiety with any success?

It's pretty much an OTC benzo, just alot less potent and in my opinion, it works better. I was feeling bad this morning and I took one and it knocked me out good for 5 hours. The only bad part was that it gave me a bit of sleep paralysis. I think it's a fairly benign drug though and it may work for you. Are you in benzo withdrawal right now?

Hi Greg
I used it combined with Propranolol when I had to go to the dentist and for an mri. Didn't know what else to use. It helped. I have also used it for insommnia.

Yuck, diphenhydramine makes my anxiety worse. It also makes me very dizzy and fatigued. I hate antihistamines!
