buspar - two weeks experience

Posted by sdb on March 1, 2005, at 13:34:39

I have taken 10mg buspar daily for two weeks. I did not have any side effect nor any antidepressant, antianxiety effects.

So basically it's done nothing for you then?

I was reading on a psych doctor's website (his main speciality is bipolar) but I found it interesting that he noted that Buspar has been virtually useless for his patients as far as he was concerned (anxiety wise).

Yet, I've heard a few people say it helps. So I guess it all depends on the person.

God designed us so uniquely, we just each experience things differently.

Maybe you could try a benzo like Klonopin instead for your anxiety??

Are you on any other meds? Antidepressents?

Sorry you haven't had success. I know it's hard when you get your hopes high and are let down.

Don't give up though. Something will work.

Buspar did nothing for me either. I was told that if you had taken a benzo first it wouldn't help with anxiety. Fondly, Phillipa

I've heard that too. I don't know how much truth there is in it.

For many of the people whom responded well to Buspar, the therapeutic effects took 2-4 weeks to develop. It is unlike the benzodiazepines in this respect, which produce immediate effects.

Buspar and benzodiazepines are completely different drugs, in structure and mechanism of action. The idea that buspar could help with benzo withdrawal (I've read a study which tested this concept) is an absurd one and shows how researchers as well as physicians can be misled by the fact that both are classed as 'anxiolytic.'Likewise, the idea that Buspar doesn't work given prior benzo exposure is a testament to the imaginations of researchers misled by their own terminology. As i take buspirone and a benzodiazepine concurrently, I can assure you that they are nothing alike in their spectrum of activity, and would class clonazepam as a clear 'anxiolytic', but buspirone works more like an antidepressant. I would give buspar four weeks to work, given no major adverse effects.

On the other hand, its effectiveness in reversing SSRI sexual side effects is apparently evident within the first week.

Are you taking it on its own? I also did not get any benefit from it...it seems that sometimes it helps when it augments another medication, but I have not heard much positive response when used on its own...

i take it alone, but i have decided two take it further two weeks to be sure about some efficacy or not. I think, it is of course difficult with drugs you must wait a long time until they begin to have impact. It is difficult to compare the "before" and the "after". I could be a placebo or not...

With klonopin and trazodone the "before" and "after" is very clear.
