Buspar and benzodiazepines are completely different drugs, in structure and mechanism of action. The idea that buspar could help with benzo withdrawal (I've read a study which tested this concept) is an absurd one and shows how researchers as well as physicians can be misled by the fact that both are classed as 'anxiolytic.'Likewise, the idea that Buspar doesn't work given prior benzo exposure is a testament to the imaginations of researchers misled by their own terminology. As i take buspirone and a benzodiazepine concurrently, I can assure you that they are nothing alike in their spectrum of activity, and would class clonazepam as a clear 'anxiolytic', but buspirone works more like an antidepressant. I would give buspar four weeks to work, given no major adverse effects.

On the other hand, its effectiveness in reversing SSRI sexual side effects is apparently evident within the first week.
