amphetamines with antipsychotics

Posted by dondon on February 8, 2005, at 16:15:13

When i take antipsychotics at the same time as dexedrine it dampens the effects of dexedrine. I have adhd and psychosis so I need them both

that makes perfect sense. Amphetamines increase dopamine release... and neuroleptics stop or lower dopamine release.

Dexedrine and seroquel seems to be a good combo. Seroquel and clozapine are the only antipsychotics that don't dampen the effects of dexedrine.

Does that include Abilify?

Well, actually neuroleptics *INCREASE* the release of dopamine, but on the other hand block activation of dopamine receptors. They alwsays also block the autoreceptors, which is responsible for the increase in release. But affinity towards autorecept and prostsynaptic receptors are not neccessarily equal.
Just think about sulpiride, amisulpride...

In your case, postsynaptic blockade just overrides and blocks the extra dopamine which is available due to amphetamine use.

bye

What is dexadrine?

I am on wellbutrin and I believe i have adhd but my pdoc insists that I try anti depressants befoer the add meds. Does Wellbutrin and Adderall/Ritalin work well together? Anyone have the experience.

I think the problem lies with the D2 blocking of antipsychotics. The best options you have would probably be seroquel, clozaril or abilify.
Seroquel doesn't block D2 receptors as much unless you get into higher doses. Clozaril blocks D4 the most, although it still blocks D2 receptors. Abilify is said to be a partial agonist of D2 receptors, but I didn't have a good experience with it myself. Good luck!
