Dalmane effective? going no where with ativan...

Posted by mmcconathy on February 8, 2005, at 16:51:06

Or Restoril?

I take Ativan 1mg now for insomnia at night which is frusting becuase i dont go to sleep, i just stay calm and awake, and i cant get mad either.

I think these were big in the 1970's, before Halcion's blockbuster in the 1980's.

Does anyone know anything about its effectiveness? duration,

Short acting meds (sedatives) are not good for me because i always wake up......, flexible sometimes but generally not for sleep.

Anyways, someone please tell me if this outdated med is effective? and if long term use???

Dalmane was my first sleep med (15mg at bedtime). It's VERY long acting. I took it with 75mg of doxepin at bedtime. Worked pretty good. You might feel a little hungover in the day though.

Because its half-life is so long, it can build up in the system such that you are affected by it all day long without necessarily recognizing it. It can produce mild sedation, drowsiness, dizziness, ataxia, loss of balance, and incoordination. You might not want to operate heave equipment while on it. :-)

The incidence of elderly people falling who have been taking Dalmane chronically is very, very high. These falls often result in broken hips. Broken hips usually herald a steep decline in health. This was the case with my grandmother.

Yes, it does accumulate over many days. I remember starting it early in the week and after several days of taking it was at a party on a weekend and couldn't drink a 2nd beer I was so zonked. Alcohol definitely will knock you out big time on it.

I dont know much on it, just researched its presrcibed for insomnia, but may be habit forming, but just like the majority of seditives.

How long does it last/ duration?

I think that restoril probably would be a much better choice. It is supposed to be good for sleep maintenance issues (staying asleep), but its not supposed to give you a hangover. I've never tried it, but I think it would probably work well for my trouble as well. The last med I took that definitely worked was Keppra 250mg at bedtime. I'm thinking about asking my pdoc about it again (just for sleep). Getting tired of seeing 3:30am or 4:45am on my clock every other night or so...

I take restoral, my p doc prescribed it...I like it, I had ambien and that just sucked...Ambien made me sick and hungover in the morning. Try Restoral it's the best sleeping med i had so far.
