Parnate withdrawal

Posted by alienatari on February 9, 2005, at 5:16:32

Hey all. Im only on 20mgs of Parnate. Will it be hard to withdraw from? I dont want a repeat of what has happened to me in the past. Withdrawing from Zoloft was absolute hell for me, yet Effexor was quite easy, go figure.

Ive lowered the dose and i feel really "edgy" now and my OCD is a lot worse but I dont think Parnate has helped my OCD much. Thank God I have some Ativan to calm me down a bit.

Also, when can i eat cheese again? I have read that its 2 weeks minimum but I was thinking of waiting 3 weeks just to be safe.

Thanks and take care.

That is a low dosage.

> Will it be hard to withdraw from?

I think you would experience some withdrawal if you were to discontinue it abruptly. You might want to take 10mg for 5 days or so. You might experience some anxiety, nervousness, fatigue, and vivid dreaming.

Did you taper gradually with Zoloft? How about with Effexor?

> Ive lowered the dose and i feel really "edgy" now and my OCD is a lot worse but I dont think Parnate has helped my OCD much.

How, then, would account for a worsening OCD? Do you think it is due to an increase in anxiety from discontinuing Parnate? Perhaps the Parnate was helping, but you were taking too low a dosage.

What's the next step for you?

It is not necessary to wait more than 2 weeks. 2 weeks is a very conservative waiting period.

Scott, How are you doing with your meds? You're on the Board a lot. Hopefully that means you are doing better. I joined the Board when you started Cymbalta and I was too. I followed your Posts daily and felt really bad when it did not work for you. It didn't work for me either. Fondly, Phillipa PS Not trying to hijack the Post.

Thanks for the reply. Yep i tapered 200mgs of Zoloft and i ended up getting one of the worst depressions ive ever had, plus it gave me akathisia when I was going off it. And my Psychatrist at the time increased my Solian which ended up giving me more akathisia.

With Effexor i was on 150mgs, went a few days on 75mgs then to nothing a few days later. Had a bit of nausea, that was all.

In regard to Parnate, i have found that its causing me anxiety and did not help my OCD at all but maybe its because im on a low dose as you were saying. I cant go above 30mgs though, the fatigue is just too much. Ive been sleeping all day because of it.

In regard to stopping an MAOI my book on MAOI's that i have says this, do you think its a bit excessive? I think I will still wait about 3 weeks before i eat anything with tyramine in it.

From the book: "Remember that the chemical effects of an MAOI remain in your body for as much as one to two weeks after you stop taking it. This is why you must continue to observe the drug and dietary precautions for at least two weeks after you have taken your last MAOI. I would suggest that you actually wait a bit longer."

Actually, Parnate leaves the body within hours of taking it. The influence it has in the body, however lasts for very much longer. The brief exposure to Parnate irreversibly blocks and effectively destroys every MAO enzyme it binds to. After several weeks of therapy, there is only about 10-20% of the body's enzyme left. After you stop taking the Parnate, it takes a number of days for the body to manufacture enough new enzyme to bring it back up to 100%. 14 days is a conservative period of waiting and should be appropriate of almost everyone.

Hi

I went from Parnate to Nardil (no washout). The Nardil made me ill. So I stopped it. Now I have not had taken any AD for a week now and no withdrawal. I don't think Parnate causes withdrawal symptoms ... or maybe I am just lucky (for once).
