I am on day 2 off Lexapro and still feeling very weird and even a bit suicidal.
My doctor wants me to try Geodon, but after my recent problem with Lexapro, I'm terrified to try another medicine.
What is Geodon for and if I have bad reactions to SSRI's, would this also be bad for me??

It is an antipsychotic. It would probably sedate you. I've never taken it myself. Maybe some of the "drug experts" will pop in and give you more expert information. Phillipa

> What is Geodon for and if I have bad reactions to SSRI's, would this also be bad for me??I was first put on an antipsychotic when in the hospital for severe depression. I was extremely surprised when this med got rid of ALL my anxiety, and some of the depression. I for that reason have asked for an atypical antipsychotic when I get very anxious. Geodon was the first one, a low dose. It did rid me of my anxeity and it did not sedate me; but it also made me very foggy-headed. I am now trying out Abilify, yet another one of these meds. For me personally it really helps the anxiety.
There are some people here that have reported bad side effects with Geodon. I don't know your diagnosis and what you have tried before.
But it is not an odd suggestion by your pdoc--don't let the title "antipsychotic" necessarily scare you. These new "atypical" ones are less scary than the old antipsychotics. Prescibing an atypical antipsychotic is a common thing to do if antidepressants don't do the trick. I do not have schizophrenia but it has helped.
But I am curious why he didn't pick Seroquel, the more popular of these new atypical antipsychotics. It can be sedating for some people, but some love it. You might ask him/her why they picked Geodon specifically, in what way they hope it may help.
Remember, our reactions are different to eaach medication.

My pdoc switched me over to Geoden today. Short history...been on all of them at one time or another. Effexor was the drug that almost ruined (ended) my life (was on three year at max dose). Two months off that, still side effects, but seeing slow but steady improvements. The last two months I have been on Lamictal and Welbutrin which not only didn't help, but kicked anxiety, depression, anger, wild mood swings into high gear. Got a little scared of myself...lol. Not sure why he didn't mention Seroquel. Never heard of Geoden, but after reading the potential side effects I will tread lightly and call at the first sign of any of those symptoms. But I don't typically have many problems with side effects (except the Effexor "discontinuation" BS).
What type of half-life? How long until I might notice any type of change (couple of days vs. weeks). I was told it was probably sedating and to take it at night. I am already on Provigil which REALLY helps with the brain fog of some of these AD's. Would be interested in keeping up with how everyone else is doing on this drug. Isn't it relatively new to the market?

Geodon is an atypical antipsychotic.
Geodon has "off-label" uses. For example, it is commonly added to the SSRI antidepressants for major depression if the SSRI alone doesn't get a favorable response.
Atypical antipsychotics can also help with anxiety as well.
People start at 20 mg/day of Geodon. The highest dose of Geodon, I believe, is 80 mg twice a day. Most people who are not psychotic, however, don't need as high of a dosage.
I take Geodon 40 mg every night. This helps me with the drowsiness that it causes. For the first few weeks I started Geodon, I felt mild nausea but this went away.
