Periactin and Prozac

Posted by sabre on January 26, 2005, at 15:24:31

Hi
If you wanted to increase dopamine, noradrenaline and GABA but not serotonin could you combine Prozac and Periactin?

I stumbled across references to Periactin:
http://www.drugs.com/PDR/Periactin_Tablets.html

It is a serotonin and histamine antagonist.
There seem to be a few drawbacks e.g. sedation,
problems for bronchial asthmatics, hyperthyroidism etc.

Has anyone tried it?

Periactin is an old anti-histamine that also is a potent serotonin blocker. They gave it to me when I went through a bought of serotonin syndrome. It's pretty sedating. I know it's also used to combat sexual side effects of SSRIs.

Well, since Prozac is a selective SEROTONIN reuptake inhibitor, and Periactin is a serotonin antagonist, I think you'd be wasting your time trying it. I've never really heard that Prozac had much effect on NE or GABA or DA, and the action of the Periactin would block the action of the Prozac, so you'd really be getting an anti-histamine.

I'm one of the lucky folks who finds that Periactin counters the sexual side effects from other anti-depressants, so I have taken it every so often for years now. I've also seen it used for other, non-allergy related disorders. It's a safe enough drug, but I don't think it would do what you're trying to do, whatever that is.

I'd advise talking to your doctor, and I wish you luck.

Try Wellbutrin + Pregabalin or Gabitril or Benzo

I think you would be better off by taking Wellbutrin since it has minimal effects serotonin & works mainly as some type of neuromodulator with slight Dopamine Reuputake activity which in combination boosts both Norepinephrine & Dopamine.

For the GABA you could try one of the new GABA meds like Pregabalin or Gabitril or a Benzo with little serotogenic activity (I think Klonopin & Xanax? have serotogenic activity so avoid those & take ativan or something like that).

The ADD med Ritalin boosts Dopamine Reuputake Inhibition & also boosts Norepinephrine but it doesn't last very long, & add meds by themselves without an antidepressant eventually cause a depression. You might be able to combine it with Wellbutrin although Wellbutrin seems to eliminate the pleasure inducing effects of ADD meds, i'm not sure why- perhaps its anti-smoking/craving activity limits stimulant euphoria or it may inhibit dopamine release by ADD meds. Adderall also boosts Dopamine & NE release but may also release small amounts of Serotonin as well.

Selegeline at 10 mg a day or less boosts Dopamine & Norepinephrine (its metabolites the l-amphetamines induce norpepinephrine release).
