Hi,
I've been taking Zyprexa for about 6 months. In that time, I've gained almost 30 pounds and according to my last blood tests, I've developed Metabolic Syndrome.
I don't know what to do. I don't know if this is grounds for stopping this med. If I had to, I don't know what else I could try. Abilify, Geodon and clozaril are out. I can't afford to gain any more weight. Any ideas?

I believe you would find Risperdal to have a much lower tendency to cause weight gain, as it only has a weak histamine H1 blockade compared to the extremely powerful one of Zyprexa, and Risperdal does not blockade serotonin-2c receptors much at all (this particular blockade can sometimes increase appetite). Risperdal does have a tendency to increase prolactin levels, and it also has a higher indicidence of EPSEs than does Zyprexa, but I think it is still a relatively good drug and far superior to the old style/traditional antipsychotics in terms of overall side effects.Todd

Hi Jeff:
I totally agree the Zyprexa causing 'weight gain.' In my case, I started to crave for 'sweetened drinks,' such as 'Pepci,' 'Orange/Grape Soda,' even 'Cool-Aid' with plenty of sugar(one cup of "real' one). However, for some reason I have NEVER increased 'appetite,' ... still the same amount of meal, even seems 'decreased food consumption.' In my guess, the change of my food intake has something to do with anti-depressants I've been on, in conjuction with the Zyprexa and the Lithium which also has a reputation of 'weight gainer.'My anti-depressants regimen, Bupropion SR 300 mg. and Trazodone 225 mg.(before the bed) helping me to stay 'almost' the same weight although I gained around 15/20 lbs. after the Zyprexa 5 mg. since the fall of 2001.
Then, in my suggestion, ... if you're able to take at least one of ADs, particularly Bupropion SR(the generic form of Wellbutrin SR), there is NO worry about 'weight issue.' Talk to your pdoc. at your next appt.
H.G.

Thanks Todd and HG.
I think I'll talk to my pdoc about the Risperdal. I'm just leary of another med change. The Zyprexa is the only thing that helps so far. Wish I could take Wellbutrin, it would be the perfect AD for me. Sadly, I'm allergic to it.

Can you take other stimulants, or a weight loss drug? I can't imagine you will have much luck with risperdal, interms of theraputic effect. I didn't. But then geodon seems to be working for me. Did you take it long enough, or was there a different reason you stoped it?
This is the end of the thread.
