i am about to start several rounds of dental work, and have been in pain and know i will be prescribed pain pills. hydrocodone (?) makes me very sick to my stomache and since so many of you are so knowledgable with the different ingrediants in medications i was wondering if you could suggest a different pain medicine. last time i had the same types of procedures i told the doc of my sickness to hydrocodone and he told me to take aleve?? after a root canal?? i do want pain medicine and have no problems with addiction to them, i never even finish the bottle. i just want a good one to ask for that does not have whatever is in hydrocodone that makes me sick, im sure its the codone.
sorry for such an ignorant question, i just know you guys will have an answer. i hope i posted to right board.thanks in advance and happy holidays-

Hi!
Ibuprofen is often effective for dental pain.

I am have the same problem with opiate derivitives.
Have you looked into Tramadol (Ultram)?
Its a synthentic morphine or something so it doesn't have the same side effects. I took it years ago for headaches.
Hope it doesn't hurt too terribly bad. I'm getting mine out next month.licious

If you are having root canal... Take ibuprofen before you leave the office after the procedure. I had a very bad experience--something they call "lightning bolts". Terrible waves of pain. When I called the office, I learned that the assistant should have given me the med before any pain started to prevent this.
Also, don't underdose. You can safely take 600 every 4 hours--maybe even more. And if you're feeling fine, take the med anyway--at least for a few days. I've gotten into trouble this way... deciding I didn't need the pain med and then getting clobbered with pain.
Another caution: I am small and had one dentist who underdosed me with vicodin after dental surgery. I don't believe body weight is a good measure of how much you need. So keep an eye on this. This country (US) is so hypersensitive about addiction that docs regularly underdose. In my opinion.
Good luck!

I have chronic pain, ibuprofen, oxycodone, asperin make me sick. So does the novacaine shot.
You can try taking ibuprofen 30 minutes after a meal, another suggestion I got was to line stomach first with an antacid.
Aleve, Tylenol and Advil don't make a dent in my pain. Stronger meds are tightly controlled, my dog would be able to get those before I could. I have joked about trying the local Veterinarian for a pain prescription. So...what's left is the liquor store or the corner pot peddler.bimini

I think you were talking about Vicoprophen, which is just Vicodin(Hydrocodone)with Ibuprophen instead of Tylenol.Your best bet is to get some Phenergan tabs to take with the Vicodin. They,ll stop the nausea. You don,t want to turn away pain meds if you,re gettin Root Canals or teeth extracted, man,if you get a dry socket or he hits the wrong nerve, you,ll wish you were just a bit nauseated, compared to the pain you,ll have in your face!Festus
