If you are having root canal... Take ibuprofen before you leave the office after the procedure. I had a very bad experience--something they call "lightning bolts". Terrible waves of pain. When I called the office, I learned that the assistant should have given me the med before any pain started to prevent this.
Also, don't underdose. You can safely take 600 every 4 hours--maybe even more. And if you're feeling fine, take the med anyway--at least for a few days. I've gotten into trouble this way... deciding I didn't need the pain med and then getting clobbered with pain.
Another caution: I am small and had one dentist who underdosed me with vicodin after dental surgery. I don't believe body weight is a good measure of how much you need. So keep an eye on this. This country (US) is so hypersensitive about addiction that docs regularly underdose. In my opinion.
Good luck!
