anti-depression, anti-migraine pro-sex

Posted by isg on December 26, 2004, at 5:09:57

Since I began taking moclobemide (a low dose: 100 mg/day), I have had a 100% reduction in migraine frequency.
I only considered moclobemide because it is one of the small number of anti-depressants that generally has no anti-sexual effects.
However, I find moclobemide does not do much for me in the way of an anti-depressant (mild dysthymia in my case), and I dislike even the slight serotonin boost it produces (serotonin increases make me feel less alive). I would prefer something which is more purely pro dopamine & noradrenaline. Does anyone have any experience and/or references for adding or substituting deprenyl/selegeline (in theory deprenyl might be a problem in conjunction with moclobemide, but perhaps not at such low doses) or bupropion or another candidate that meets the above criteria?

Thanks to all.

Hi,
I dont think you can count moclobemide out as an anti-depressant at the dose your taking it.. your at 1/3 to 1/4 the therapeutic dose... also, i cant help but think that your comparing moclobemide to ssri's in terms of serotonin.. although both tend to increase serotonin, they do so by vastly different mechanisms... sorry to be negative, but i think you could lose your headache remission if you give up on this drug without giving it a proper trial...

Hi bps,

Thanks for your reply.

It is true that I am taking a mini-dose of moclobemide, but if I detect any serotonin effect at this level, I do not want to escalate. I tried 5 mg fluoxetine one day a decade ago and it made me feel miserable -- this is a much more subtle effect.

I have been using moclobemide at this level for a year, and am very pleased not to have migraines (or anti-sexual effects).

Still, I would like a bit more stimulation-motivation (DA-NE) effect than I get from moclobemide (plus a gram of dl-phenylalanine). That is why I was considering playing with bupropion (it is on the list for migraine prophylaxis, but I cannot find any real studies supporting its use) or deprenyl (or any other suggestions?!).
