Why wait with Li+?

Posted by tensor on December 22, 2004, at 15:52:21

Hi,

i've recently been diagnosed with cycling unipolar depression. My pdoc wants to push the dosage of my current meds(zoloft+remeron) to max, before adding lithium or lamictal, why?
If i somehow recover at maximum dosage, wouldn't it be just a wait for next relapse? It's a long way climbing up to 200mg zoloft and a long wait with nothing to do, nothing that i can do.

Hi Mattias, I don't know the answer to your question, but can I ask: with cycling unipolar depression, what do you cycle to and from?! Not mania I presume as it is unipolar depression. Between "normal" and "depressed"? How long does the cycle take?

xx

Hi,

yes i cycle from normal and depression, the time between depressive episodes varies from a couple of month to a year.

Thank you,
Mattias

Tensor:

I don't know the answer either, I'm sorry. But perhaps you can enlighten me as to why the Dr. wants to add Lithium at all? It's not really that great for helping with depression and you don't seem to have mania (forgive me if I missed something). I've taken Lithium for Manic Depression for about two years (after many other med trials) and it has been a life saver for me. But it has A LOT of side effects. Are the two meds you're taking helping at all?

Hi KikiCabell,

My meds are not working anymore, they stopped working suddenly, after high doses i became worse, so i'm back at 'normal dose' but still higher than the maintenance dose i used to take. I have cyclic unipolar depression, that's what they claim anyway. And it can be true. They want to add lithium as a augmentor, i'm not to knowledged about neuroleptica.. which s/e do you have?

What is "neuroleptica"? Anti-psychotic meds? If so, beware of the tarkindysthia (sp?). I developed a "twirling tongue" on Abilify. Geodon has not caused such things.

Anyhoo, Lithium... well, I have a feeling I have an unusual number of side effects - nausea, tremors, thyroid problems, getting sweaty at times (yuck), and sometimes I just don't feel good. But it and the Geodon have "stabilized" me, most of the time anyway. I'm still not completely up to par, but definitely better.

If you do try Lithium and it makes you really nauseous, you might try the liquid form - that helped me.

Good luck.
