Hi everybody,
Did anybody gain weight while on a benzo ??(Clonazepam,Xanax,Ativan,Valium..etc).
(Please remember that a lot of us take benzos with other psychiatric drugs , and most other classes of psyc drugs are well-known for causing weight).
Thank you for sharing your thoughts,
Adam

I take a benzo only and I've not noted any problematic weight gain due to the use of it.

No weight gain. I have only been on them for about 4 months...But I have been losing weight due to exercise. I read somewhere they can cause weight gain because if you are taking them for anxiety (which causes you to have a messed up stomach and metabolism) they take away the anxiety so you gain the weight your stress and anxiety has been keeping off.

The reason I'm asking is that I noticed that in some threads people sometimes say that they gained weight while on x drug and a benzo, and some even concluded that the benzos were behind the weight gain, not the other x,and x drugs which are well-known to cause weight gain.
I was wondering because I myself took lots and lots of psyc medications, and, based on general info and my experience reached a conclusion that benzos do not in any way directy cause weight gain. The only thing,as mentioned before,is that when one is free of stress or anxiety, might be able to enjoy a good meal more, but they do not STIMULATE appetite or fool around with our metabolism.
I would be very surprised to know about somebody who took only benzo and gained a huge amount of weight...What do you think?
Thank you all.
Adam.

Hi Adam,
I think what you've written is correct. Folks are so variable as to how emotional unwellness effects eating. For me, when toxic anxiety is raging, I have NO desire for food. Others find these emotional unwell states triggers eating. I do think there's alot of reason to believe some psych meds mess with metabolism and this has been evident for alot of folks.
Just from my personal experience, I believe my benzo use has been weight neutral. To address the questions you aked me: I'm on Klonopin. Have been for the better part of 3 years - daily use. My dose is quite low, for the most part, but I titrate - highest dosing at 1 - 2 mgs per day divided and lowest at .25 - .5 mgs per day divided.
So, I guess there could be a relationship between the weight issues and higher dosing of a benzo or prehaps the benzo in combo could exacerbate weight gain. I don't know that answer.

for about 2.5 months, and I am continuing to lose weight, 30 lbs. since May. This is a miracle for me as I've always found it difficult to manage my weight. I think maybe I was just so depression and anxious for so many years that these things contributed to my being over weight. 20 more lbs. and I should be at my ideal and that hasn't happened since 1980. Good luck!
