Has anyone come across a medication which is effective for (non-delusional) body dysmorphic disorder that is not an SSRI?

Clomipramine is used for this.
Sometimes opiates are used for this (short term)

BDD would seem pretty similar to Anorexia Nervosa, in which the patient has a distorted view of her own body. I'm basing this question on that idea, so if I'm wrong about that, ignore this question.
Why medication? Psychotherapy is certainly the best approach to the body distortion of AN, and I'd think it's the same for BDD.
Just wondering...

Hi Racer,
I have been to two psychologists. One of them didn't help me, the other said he couldn't help me!

Ed.

Hi,
Yes, I suppose that I am getting behind with my studying. The course is so dull :-( I will have lots of work to do over the christmas holiday.
BDD is when you get obsessed with the idea that your body (or a part of your body) is very ugly or deformed even though it is actually normal. I have hated most parts of my body at one time or another eg. skin, chest etc.
Do you think you'll be ready to go back to uni next year?
Regards,
Ed.

I don't really know. If I'm honest, I think if I was allowed another year out I would probably prefer that. It just depends on whether they offer me that, I dunno. I've only been there one term, and they've given me nearly two years out. So I don't know how much they'll want to invest in a person who they've only spent a little time with.
I'd rather take more time because, even if I'm better, there are different levels of "being better". Cambridge was stressy enough to make even a "normal" person crazy! I'd need to be 110% if I was to go back in that environment. The years that my illness began manifesting itself were the years that I was studying like a maniac in. You kind of sacrifice your mental health to get good grades. I would love to do something I dunno, where I would have a life etc, but my mental health came first. I feel like if I went back to Cambridge at the moment, "achieving" would become more important and I might fall ill again. And the thing is, I didnt realise I was ill the first time around, so I might not realise again the next time around. And I don't want to end up in a similar mess again.
Woooh, Katie, stop writing! Sorry about the epilogue over a simple "when are you going back to Uni" question! hehe. Hope you are alright Ed. Keep posting. xx

Hi Katie,
There is no way that I would have coped at Cambridge because I get tired too easily and I'd constantly be obsessing about how everyone else was so much more intelligent than me. Maybe you should come to Manchester Uni!

Ed.
