I'm wondering if any babblers know which antidepressants are safest for fetal development (if any)? Or can anyone direct me to a good resource with info on this? Anyone know if some meds are safer during certain weeks of gestation and not others?
Thanks.

Hi Noa.Prozac and the tricyclics have been studied the most closely. After many years of observation, they are generally accepted as having no teratogenic effects. The other SSRIs seem to be OK as far as teratogenicity is concerned, but little work has been performed to verify this.
Paxil and Effexor are known to carry the greatest risk of perinatal complications as the newborn experiences a withdrawal syndrome. If it were necessary to use either of these drugs, it might be desirable to begin weaning off of them slowly during the last trimester and hope that the pregnancy is acting as a natural antidepressant, which it sometimes does.
I guess I would choose Prozac first.
The anticonvulsant mood-stabilizers are considered teratogenic. I don't know what the statistical risks are.

Don't get too excited--there's nothing in the works. Just thinking about it. Want to assess the feasibility on all fronts. At my age, deadline approaching fast (if I haven't already passed it, that is).

Thanks, And right back at ya! :)

Thanks, Scott. Do you know if anyone has studied long term effects on kids who were exposed in utero to Prozac or tricyclics (for subtler problems that might not show up at birth)?

I think I did see a study like that, but it was a while ago, and I don't remember anything about it. Sorry.

Here are two links to posts on the subject of antidepressants in pregnancy. The first one has links to a draft review I did. In it, the references are all hotlinked to Pubmed, if you want to verify anything, or expand on what I describe. The second link has a link to an article written by Dr. Koren, the long-time head of the Hospital for Sick Children's Motherisk Program. Motherisk seeks out all information on potential toxic risks during pregnancy. See: http://www.motherisk.org/

Good luck on your blessed event, even if it is still a twinkle in your eye.
