Stimulants

Hi,

Opinions of stimulant users please....

Which stimulant did you find most effective in improving concentration on college work? .....Or did you find them all equally effective?

Which stimulant is least likely to worsen anxiety? I get the impression people with anxiety tend to prefer Dexedrine.

Does anyone have any opinions regarding which stimulant is most/least likely to poop-out?

Ed

I think they all increase anxiety to some degree or another. Concerta gave me overwhelming anxiety and a nasty crash towards the end of the day -- same with regular ritalin. Adderall XR is great, but didn't last all day for me. I have settled on generic(Barr) adderall 10mg tid. Shire's immediate release seems to make me much more anxious for some reason. The generic by Barr tastes like candy so you can just let it dissolve on your toungue and take it without water, wouldn't recommend trying that with shire. Haven't tried any of the pure dex formulations but I have read a few posts on here saying that it does cause less anxiety than any of the others.

Barr Adderall gets my vote.

Matt

Thank you for your reply :-)

I think I'd rather try dextroamphetamine than methylphenidate. Adderall isn't available in the UK!

Ed

PS. Were you born in 1984 like me?

Would appear so -- Year of the rat or something exciting like that... =)

That is a bummer adderall isn's available, yet dex is?

What info do you have on the pure dex? I'm running on empty; can't get to appts, can't get NDLs (normal activities of daily living) done. I'm so overwhelmed with m.d. (have quite a few physical issues) and psych/therapy appts. I need something that I can just buy at a regular store, and won't highly increase anxiety. ADD? P just asked me if ran in fam'..that'all..and it does not. Drowning in commitments!!!

Adderall provided a significant reduction in social and 'other' anxiety for my mother.

in contrast she cannot even drink coffee or it causes panic. same with wellbutrin.

ill probably be on a stim in a couple weeks myself and report.

Having tried dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), my advice would be to trial that or dexmethylphenidate (Focalin) or dextromethamphetamine (Desoxyn), as these all contain the most centrally active enantiomer without the one the that causes more peripheral side effects.

Hello corafree :-)

I'm not sure where you live but here in the UK two stimulants are available (apart from Provigil). In general, you can only get stimulants from psychiatrists, no one else really prescribes them. I've heard paediatricians and other docs prescribe stims in some countries, that doesn't really happen here.

We have...

Dexamphetamine/dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine)
and methylphenidate (Ritalin/Equasym/Concerta XL)

We don't have...
Adderall, Dexedrine spansules, Desoxyn, or Focalin.

Ed

If you have any problems with social anxiety, then you might want to stay away from dexadrine. It does improve focus and motivation (in the short acting form) but it agrivates feelings of anxiety more than you would believe. At least this is how it affected me. Klonopin + Adderall + Memantine can be argued for.

None, all gave me a nice alertness and energy without anxiety in the begining, but then nothing and feeling tired.....maybe the most powerful and lasting was fenproporix but difference is not huge.
Adam.

Hi Adam,
No fenproporex in the UK I'm afraid! I'd like to try dexedrine but in reality there's no chance that i'll be prescribed it. My pdoc doesn't know much about drugs anyway, he thought buspirone was a tricyclic antidepressant!!
