Remeron and Sensitivity to Noises

Posted by del on November 2, 2004, at 16:02:37

After trying Remeron (mirtazapine) for a few days, I noticed that I had a sharply increased reaction to certain unexpected or surprising noises, such as the phone ringing or various warning sounds that my computer makes. Those "normal" sounds really made me jump! Since this effect persisted, I stopped taking the mirtazapine after three weeks, thinking the problem would go away and I would quickly return to normal. But nearly one month later I am still overreacting to those sounds.

Has anyone else experienced this reaction to Remeron/mirtazapine or know what mechanism causes it? Has my brain been permanently affected or damaged by this medication?

I had the same problem on Remeron, but it went away after I stopped taking it.

I would recomend taking some magnesium 250-500mg day. This is a common complaint in magnesium deficiant people (sensitivity to loud noises)

I have also read that noradrenic antidepressants can lower magnesium levels.

How Much Remeron Are You Taking?

At doses usually somewhere between 30 and 60mg depending on the person, Remeron can cause an increase in the release of norepinephrine (one of your body's fight or flight hormones). The dosage at which this effect kicks in seems to vary modestly from person to person.

Hope that helps!

Remeron is a potent antihistamine. Strangely, whenever i've taken other antihistamines such as Phenergan i've always found myself easily startled by noise.

Remeron made me jumpy too. Was only on it for six months and gained fifty lbs. Ate like six pregnant women...lol. Mainly stopped taking it when my pdoc stopped practicing (went into research).

To Smeegs
How long ago did you stop taking it? Are you still jumpy?

It's been quite a few years since I was on Remeron. The jumpiness went away once I switched to a different med.
