Tapering off Remeron?

Posted by Joslynn on October 20, 2004, at 16:16:47

About 3 years ago, I was on both Remeron and Celexa to get me out of a severe depression. It lifted, and after about a year and a half, I went off Remeron because it gave me the munchies and I was gaining weight. I eventually switched from Celexa to Lexapro as well. I went along for about two years or so on just Lexapro, doing fine.

About six weeks ago, I had an emotional loss in my life that triggered an episode of depression. It was not a long episode, but I spiraled down very quickly and it was quite severe, with suicidal ideation and all that. Pdoc said I should go back on Remeron just for a month or so to get through the crisis, because I had not been eating or slepping for a couple weeks.

I was on 15 mgs of Remeron for about a month, then for the past week I have been down to 7.5.

My bottle will run out in a couple days. My question is, can I go completely off Remeron after going down to 7.5 for about a week? Or do I need to renew my scrip and take it for another week at 7.5? This would be, one month 15, 2 weeks 7.5 and then nothing. Or is just one weeke at 7.5 enough?

The reason I ask is, I am getting the munchies really bad again, and I am afraid that with Halloween coming up, candy + Remeron = me looking like The Great Pumpkin.

The crisis has passed, I am talking about it in therapy and I don't think I still need the Remeron. How slowly do I have to taper off?

Meanwhile I continue to take the Lexapro during the day and will keep doing that.

I guess I should ask the pdoc but wanted other opinions. Thanks.

The great Pumpkin. lol. I know what you mean. It would be okay though for you to stop it at 7.5mg. In the past, when I have stopped Remeron, it is at 7.5mg that I quit taking it. And after a week you should defenately be okay. If it disrupts your sleep, try Benadryl 50mgs, and that should help you to sleep; but don't expect it to be the quality sleep that Remeron provides.
Hmm, I'm starting to look like the Great Pumpkin myself. Oh well.

Remeron doesn't need much tapering, but you will have a few days of insomnia from it. I would use a benzo such as temazepam for a few days.

Cheers,
Paul.

Thank you (nm)

Hi, I was on 60 mg Remeron for a couple of months and stopped it cold turkey when I wanted to switch to Cymbalta 2 and a half weeks ago. I was fine, just a little insomnia which is going away.

Thanks!

Well, just took my last half of a Remeron tonite. (7.5) I think it did help me thru an emotional crisis, but I don't think I need both that and the Lexapro. The lexapro doesn't seem to increase my appetite that I notice, but the Remeron does. Thinking about munchies especially sweets...

I hope it goes well. I think it will be fine. I have to remember that I went about 2 yrs without any Remeron at all, after being on it a year. So I can do without it.
