Questions about HPA axus and Endocrinologist

Posted by iris2 on October 2, 2004, at 2:44:01

I am going to see an endocrinologist next week. I have elevated Prolactin level which I think is caused by Amisulpride. I need to have him evaluate this. It is causing me not to have my period.

I also suffer from severe depression and a lot of immune deseases. I thought it would be prudent to have my cortisol tested but I cannot figure out what specific tests to ask him for. And if the tests do show increased cortisol than I am also unsure as to the treatment.

I would apprecaite any suggestions as to what to ask him to do.

Hi, got a few abstracts you might like to read, but first did you know that prolactin inhibitory hormone is actually dopamine. Prolactin is also influenced by insulin and cortisol, and prolactin also has a profound effect on the immune system. Prolactin has also been found to be high in autoimmune disease.

Pituitary hormones that might be worth asking about... prolactin, TSH, LH, FSH, ACTH. Hope it's not too complicated!!

Ray

PS the interleukins that prolactin upregulates in the immune system are related to inflammation and depression.

sorry, several links the same, had probs with cutting and pasting.....hopefully this is the one I wanted to paste! This was the line that caught my eye..

"The greater prolactin response to l-tryptophan infusion in depressed subjects may be the result of an increase in dopamine receptor sensitivity, secondary to reduced dopamine levels."

I do not understand all this a lot. If I get this right my increased prolactin is most probably due to the Amisulpride itself and was not high before taking the medication?

Yes, it seems to be likely that amisulpride is raising prolactin. Just found out that amisulpride works on dopamine receptors, and as I mentioned before, dopamine regulates the release of prolactin from the pituitary.

High prolactin is associated with autoimmune disease, so not sure if you had autoimmune problems before the medication.

Sorry, that the articles are confusing, this one seems to be a bit more clear...hopefully!

Hey Irene thanks for the response in my 'I Need Help' thread. I wrote you back a response. Check out this article here out about raised cortisol levels in psychotically depressed patients. You might find it interesting. I thought about this as an alternative to me if I have to stop taking antipsychotics.
