200 Zoloft not doing it

Posted by msurtees on September 24, 2004, at 14:49:40

Well...I've been on Zoloft for about a year. A month ago my new doc put me up to 200mg and said we'll see how the depression and ocd is in about a month. It's been a month and not much improvement if any at all. He mentioned that the next thing we might consider is adding Wellbutrin.

Would like some input from others. Should I go for that or ask to be switched to a completely different drug and go off the Zoloft?

Thanks.

How much total improvement did the Zoloft provide for your depression and OCD, as compared to taking nothing? What are some of your symptoms?

There is definately an improvement between now and before I ever took Zoloft. On a scale rating my depression and ocd:
Before zoloft = 1
200mg zoloft = 5
Desired = 10!

I realize there's no such thing as a happy pill and I have to be realistic. I would much rather be where I am now than before....but...sure would like to see a big improvement from where I am now. Things are just not all that great.

Thanks

Zoloft is rubbish in my opinion.

Go to Clomipramine. Start of slow.

It is a great drug for OCD and depression.

I suppose adding the Wellbutrin might be worth trying. I was originally going to suggest just switching to another med, but if the Zoloft has helped you that much, you might want to stay on it for a while longer.

If you do eventually switch meds, don't go to another SSRI, which will almost certainly not give you any greater improvement than the Zoloft has. It would make much more sense IMO to try a drug with a dual serotonin/norepinephrine action, such as Effexor or Cymbalta. I don't know if these would really be much better for your OCD, but they probably would for your depression, at least.

The prevailing thought on OCD is that it is primarily linked to serotonin, but I sometimes question if that isn't a little simplistic. I have OCD myself and found even a high dose of the heavily serotonergic MAOI Nardil to not be remarkably effective in that respect. The more dopaminergic MAOI Parnate that I started a month ago seems to offer more promise at this point. OCD is a disorder for which cognitive behavioral therapy can also be very helpful.

It's also marketed as "Doggy Prozac"-- approved for dogs and cats with separation anxiety disorder, called "Clomicalm"
