I am curious about this drug. I have taken celexa in the past and am now on prozac. Isnt this a combo of the 2?? Is it good for depression? I go to my pdoc soon and i know she is either going to up me to 40mg prozac and keep me at 100mg lamictal. Should i give that a try first? And if that doesnt work for me, ask for lexapro? I feel better now on prozac than with paxil (prev. drug) but i still am not where i want to be...
any advice?

i would defently try the prozac increase first. if that doesnt do it then you could try lexapro, wellbutrin or zoloft.
the Combo lexapro/Wellbutrin is very effective

Your next logical move would definitely be a Prozac dose increase.
As for your other question, Lexapro is not a combination of Prozac and Celexa.
Lexapro is a good drug, but so is Prozac.

helloe there, chemist here....just a quick mention of something i read in this post and one you made above that ought to be addressed before you consider switching meds: celexa is a mixture of ``left handed'' and ``right handed'' citalopram: the active ingredients are these mirror images of one drug only, and prozac (fluoxetine) is not in the mix at all. lexapro is the ``left handed'' kind of citalopram only, and is reported to be more active than the ``right handed'' version of citalopram and to have fewer side effects associated with it. as i have not taken lexapro and have taken celexa albeit briefly years ago, i cannot comment. in any event, prozac is not involved in either formulation. all the best, chemist

I had good luck with both Prozac and Celexa (was on each for about a year, and in both cases stopped because I was feeling much better) but when I recently relapsed and tried Lexapro, it did nothing for me.
And this may or may not be significant but: both times I tried Lex (about 3 months apart) I ended up with a very nasty UTI!I have decided to just grit my teeth and ride this one out.

Thanks guys! I dont know where I heard that lexapro was a combo of those drugs...I do remember hearing something about them taking the "good" part of celexa and putting it into lexapro. Wonder what else is in there? I guess for now I will up my dose of prozac to 40mg when i see my pdoc.
I just want to say to everyone who reads this, I am so glad to have you as part of a support system that most of us can not get at home..I truely value everyones opinion and it means alot to me and Im sure everyone on this site.
:)
smiles....

You are correct about Lexapro being a combo of Celexa and Prozac. I had been on Prozac for 7 years with excellent results until it pooped out. I am now on 30mg Lexapro and am unipolar depression free after 45 days. Lex took longer to work than Prozac. Since you are doing well on Prozac, I would stay with it until it poops out. Than you can go to Lexapro. As far as side effects, both gave me headaches. I experienced no sexual side effects while on Lexapro and had sexual side effects from Prozac in the beginning but subsided later on. I am male. Good luck.

hi FST, i have to jump in here...lexapro is the (S) enantiomer of citalopram, not a combination of the (R,S)-citalopram (celexa) and fluoxetine (prozac). lexapro is designated (S)-citalopram or, alternatively, escitalopram and in made/marketed by Forest, as the oxalate salt. Prozac is a trademark of Eli Lilly and Co. and is the racemate hydrochloride salt of fluoxetine....all the best, chemist

Thanks Chemist. I stand corrected. I had read an article, I think it was the Reader's Digest, where that statement was made. Perhaps, it was an oversimplification.
