Xanax XR vs Klonopin at bedtime?

Posted by chess on August 3, 2004, at 6:14:05

Anyone taken Xanax XR at bedtime?

Did its anti-anxiety effect last until and through the next morning?

Did it work better than Klonopin for those who have tried both at bedtime?

I'm taking Klonopin but my doc has suggested Xanax XR thinking a single dose of Xanax XR would last longer than a single dose of Klonopin and be less sedating and more helpful for my depression as well as for my anxiety.

hello chess, chemist here. i can comment on a few of the items below, and i am certain others will fill in the missing links.....

> Anyone taken Xanax XR at bedtime?

i have taken the immediate release form (as i do currently, throughout the day) at bedtime, not the XR. however - and this is just from my PDR, cribbing - the manufacturer of both forms notes that peak plasma levels are reached in 1 to 2 hours. i would expect that the IR/XR would thus behave similarly if taken at bedtime, although the enhanced half-life of the XR would probably manifest as a bit of grogginessupon wakening, although that is my opinion only.

again, i cannot answer from personal experience, but given the longer half-live, i would suspect that the XR would exhibit this effect in the a.m. more than the IR form would on an equivalent dose basis.

again, i cannot compare xanax XR with klonopin IR, as you request. i can compare xanax IR and klonopin IR, and report that i am less groggy with xanax than with klonopin. i want to add that the klonopin grogginess did abate somewhat over time, and i found it to be dose-dependent and not overwhelming in the 0.5 to 1 mg range.

there are data that indicate that antidepressant properties are associated with alprazolam (and at least one other drug). based upon the posts i have read concerning xanax XR, it appears that the single-dosing is effective if your anxiety/panic are managed by that dose. the half-life is extended, but if the amount available to do the job is not present late in the day, you will find yourself needing to augment at that time. it is very likely dependent upon the individual and the level of anxiety in addition to concurrent meds being taken. all the best, chemist

the other drug is adinazolam. I know someone who treats her depression with Xanax, and from what I know about her situation it is associated with fewer adverse effects than SSRI treatment, in her case at least. Adinazolam was abandoned, from the hints I have gathered from isolated abstracts, because of the widespread prejudice against benzos, and the rigid conviction that anything with 'benzodiazepine' in its chemical name (prefaced by 'triazolo-' or not) could not be an antidepressant. These facts indicate that 'antidepressant' is not an altogether innocent term, it has been stained both by some curious exclusions and some equally dubious inclusions.

Hi there,

I had been taking 2 mg of Klonopin at night for the past month which worked like a charm until about a week ago. I would wake up at 4am, eyes wide open, and couldn't fall back to sleep. I called my pdoc yesterday and he prescibed 3 mg of xanax xr for me to take. I took my first dose last night and am happy to report that I slept through the night without any awakening. On the downside, I woke up very groggy, slightly depressed, but no anxiety. It is now 1pm and still feel less anxious than I normally do around this time. I think I may have to back down to 2 mg tonight and see what happens.

My question to anyone out there....is xanax xr known to induce depression??

Thanks,

Nicole

The reports I have read, as well as my personal experience (I have never taken it, but I have a friend who does) suggest that Xanax has antidepressant properties.

I take xanax every night to sleep. I have for about 3 yrs now. I tried the XR but I felt more sleepy throughout the day with it, so i went back to the regular ones. I am able to sleep through the night w/ xanax, unless I am super stressed about something. But, I do feel groggy and depressed some in the morning too. I have not heard of someone just taking xanax for depression. Its an anti-anxiety drug. I take it bc I have panic attacks as well as depression (but i take prozac for depression and lamictal) ..

Well, I had my second trial with the xanax xr last night and I awoke at 4 am, wide awake. This is all so frustrating. I have a call into my pdoc and I know he will probably have me take zyprexa. It usually works but I feel very hungover the next day.
