My pdoc says Valium Halcion are the same thing!

Posted by jerrympls on August 4, 2004, at 23:36:08

So -I saw my pdoc a couple days ago and finally got him to agree to put me on Halcion for my insomnia (which has worked well for me in the past). However, it was such a tug of war I couldn't believe it. I'm also taking Valium during the day for anxiety. I explained to him that Valium, Xanax, Ativan, etc. don't make me sleepy - they just help with anxiety. So he responds with "Well, since you're on Valium, ALL your benzo receptors are already saturated so taking Halcion wouldn't do anything - and it's basicallly the same as Valium."

Someone PLEASE help me prove him wrong. He's a 4th year RESIDENT pdoc and I know more about meds than he does - but my knowledge seems to make him feel awkward.

UGH. As if I didn't have anything else to worry about!

Thanks!
Jerry :-)

Hi Jerry,
Perhaps it's time to find another PDOC then if this one isn't working for you. That's too bad that he's intimidated by knowledge, my PDOC loves it. She told me today how well informed I was, and seemed appreciative that I was taking responsibility for my health.
I hope everything works out.

What he's saying is ridiculous, as some of the benzos are clearly more skewed toward sleep (e.g. Halcion, Restoril) than anxiety (Librium would be a good example). Valium is both sedative and anxiolytic, but my book "Psychotropic Drugs" gives it xxx for anxiety and xx for sleep. OTOH, Halcion is listed as x for anxiety and xxx for sleep. The two drugs also have drastically different half lives, with Halcion at 1.5-5 hours and Valium at 20-80 hours. There's little doubt that Halcion is a far superior sleep aid, particularly in situations where a person has problems falling asleep (as opposed to maintaining sleep, where Restoril may be a better choice).
