Clonidine to Lower Norepinephrine??

Posted by RetiredYoung on July 26, 2004, at 17:10:56

Hello all - My pdoc has determined that the irritability and anger that I've been experiencing is due to inappropriately high levels of norepinephrine. He has prescribed clonidine as a remedy; he states that he has effectively used this in the past for similar cases, as clonidine, apparently, lowers the norepinephrine levels associated with rage, etc. In fact, he says that in certain patients, their feedback has been that they've never felt as relaxed.

In all of my 'Net depression reading over the years, I don't recall coming across clonidine anywhere. I'm hoping some folks here have, and can share some comments. Thanks..

Clonidine is an Antihypertensive that is Alpha-2 NE agonist & is worth trying. Some people, myself included, get cranky & irritable after taking Remeron, which is an Alpha-2 NE antagonist
& essentially does the opposite to Clonidine.

Cheers,
Panda.

Clonidine is often used with Ritalin to reduce the irritability and anger seen with it's use as well as in ADHD .

Cairo's post is encouraging.

Two other treatments that might be relevant are Tegretol/Trileptal and Zoloft.

Good luck.

Thanks all! My pdoc had augmented my Lexapro with Adderall to help problems related to fatigue and lethargy, with much initial success. After a few weeks, though, apparently the stimulation to norepinephrine (and dopamine) was getting too much and I started feeling overstimulated, irritable, etc. So, to counter, we've lowered the dosages of Adderall (from a total of 45mg to around 10mg, per day) and added 0.1mg Clonidine one to two times, per day.

I just started last night, so we'll see how it works. I do seem to feel a bit calmer already.

Anyone else gone through a similar situation? It was comforting to me to see the link/info re: Clonidine used w/Ritalin - seems to be a lot like my case.
