Any comments on Buspar?

Posted by rolie12 on July 25, 2004, at 19:39:22

I am taking 30 mg per day of Buspar for anxiety. So far, so good. Just thought I would get some input on this medicine. I was on Effexor and Wellbutrin. Quit Effexor due to electric zap/shocks. Starting to come off of terrible withdrawls from Effexor and am hoping Buspar will be the drug for me for anxiety.

Buspar didn't do a thing for me. Zyprexa finally brought my anxiety down to a manageable level.

Hi there, Buspar can be a very good medication. My brother has used Buspar for a long time with good effects. The only thing about it is that it takes time to work, weeks in fact. give it time to work and hopefully you'll start to notice the effect. As far as your effexor withdrawal is concerned, maybe consider taking another SSRi for awhile and then tapering off of that if you want to go SSRI/SSNRI free. Effexor is absolutely notorious for having a painful w/d syndrome, and a good dose of Prozac or Lexapro may help you for a couple monthes and also be easier to taper. Just my 2 cents, thanks

I was on the generic for Buspar for about 5 months. It helped with the panic attacks until it just stopped working suddenly. I am now on Lexapro.
I wish you lots of luck with the Buspar. It was easier for me to get started taking Buspar than the Lexapro. I think the difference was that I hit some depression that the Buspar didn't help.

Thanks for the info. I know everyone has to find the right meds for their body and I think that is hard to do. So far, so good with Buspar. I tried Lexapro last year and it gave me extreme panic/anxiety attacks. It's been a while since I tried Prozac, but I remember not liking that either. Zoloft seemed to be the only SSR that was ok, but didn't feel it was helping like it should after a while. Not really sure about Wellbutrin since I stopped that thinking that's what was causing the electrical zaps. Anyway, thanks again.

I wonder why they stop working? I am thinking I will probably have to go back on something for depression since I don't think this drug will help that part of it. I have a doc appt next week, so I hope I do ok until then. I am also hoping I wont need an antidepressant since my major problem is anxiety/panic, but that's wishful thinking. Thanks!

Just know that you will probably have to take a large amount of it. Also, I noticed that it does most of its changes in the 5-8 day and doesn't change a whole lot after that. I use it to taper off of meds that up the serotonin that take a month to change. For example, I take it because 5mg of Buspar seems to change my anxiety the least compared to all the other SSRI type meds like 12.5 Paxil (is like 30 Buspar for me), 37.5 Effexor - like around 30 also.
