But I've read people complain of insomnia while on Nardil. What is up with that?
What are people's sexual experiences like while taking Nardil?

Insomnia isn't a problem for me, I sleep very well on Nardil, the sexual experience is a little different, it takes a lot longer for me to have an orgasm... the first 4 months i couldnt have on at all then after that I could again......

> What are people's sexual experiences like while taking Nardil?Nardil can make me sleepy sometimes, especially in the afternoon sometimes. i don't think i suffer from insomnia any worse on Nardil, but this is difficult to say for sure since i rarely ever go to bed at a reasonable time.
Nardil has dramatically decreased my libido and has caused me severe anorgasmia (i.e., almost impossible to finish) at 60mg, and i've been on it about 10 months.

As I've mentioned here many times, Nardil gives me bad insomnia--I would say the worst of the 10 or so drugs I've tried. SSRIs and Effexor also give me bad insomnia, so it's no surprise that Nardil does, too. I have noticed some afternoon drowsiness and was taking some naps at one point on the Nardil; prior to that, I hadn't taken a nap--not even if I tried to--in probably 15 years. As the insomnia has gone away with the help of sleeping aids, the drowsiness has diminished also. One of Nardil's notorious side effects is delayed or absent orgasm. In this way, it closely resembles the SSRIs and Effexor, which like Nardil, work very strongly on serotonin. Well, I happen to be a fellow who has more of a problem the opposite way, if you know what I mean, and this is one reason I became interested in the SSRIs to begin with back in the 90's. Unfortunately, Prozac (I think I took 30 mg/day max), Zoloft (100 mg/day max), and Effexor (150 mg/day max) all had absolutely no effect on the problem.
However, Nardil at 90 mg/day sure as heck does, and for me, this particular effect of the med represents a huge benefit. In fact, this was one of the major reasons I wanted to try Nardil rather than Parnate, as Parnate, like Wellbutrin, is more of a pro-sexual drug because it is so dopaminergic. I had also read an anecdote elsewhere from a fellow who testified that Marplan, which is another hydrazine derivative MAOI not greatly different from Nardil, had a similar benefit for him in delaying orgasm. My sympathies to the majority of people for whom this side effect represents a large drawback, however, because I know it must be distressing, and it can be very difficult to treat.

> ToddTodd, Just curious, do you like the MAOI nardil better that the SSRI's? Do you take it for SAD? Sorry for the questions I am new so just curious. Have taken Prozac and stopped, now I take Paxil & Clonazepam. I went off of it for about two months and went back on it. I have read alot about Parnate and Nardil which is supposed to be the best for severe SAD which I have had all my life. Paxil has provided considerable relief but I wonder if Nardil or Parnate is better, especially for the sexual side effects and the constantly being tired and lack of motivation.

I definitely prefer Nardil to the SSRIs, which are not ideal antidepressants IMHO. I feel that the lack of activity on the norepinephrine system can cause problems with emotional dulling and is more apt to lead to poop-out than some of the other antidepressant classes. Paxil actually is fairly powerful in absolute terms in its effect on norepinephrine, but it is ridiculously powerful on serotonin. I think both of these effects together are the major reason for its efficacy for SAD.I take Nardil mainly for depression and also for social phobia. I can't say that I really have general social anxiety disorder, but I have more of a phobia that appears in certain situations and can be most dreadful. As I indicated in my previous post, one of the reasons I was more interested in Nardil than Parnate was because Nardil DOES HAVE sexual side effects, specifically, delayed or absent orgasm (The delay was what I was interested in). If you are looking for an MAOI with little or no sexual side effects, Parnate is the one to go with. It is also clearly more activating than Nardil, as Parnate's molecular structure is somewhat amphetamine-like, providing a noticeable direct stimulant effect in addition to all of its basic MAOI properties.
