> Todd, Just curious, do you like the MAOI nardil better that the SSRI's? Do you take it for SAD? Sorry for the questions I am new so just curious. Have taken Prozac and stopped, now I take Paxil & Clonazepam. I went off of it for about two months and went back on it. I have read alot about Parnate and Nardil which is supposed to be the best for severe SAD which I have had all my life. Paxil has provided considerable relief but I wonder if Nardil or Parnate is better, especially for the sexual side effects and the constantly being tired and lack of motivation.
I definitely prefer Nardil to the SSRIs, which are not ideal antidepressants IMHO. I feel that the lack of activity on the norepinephrine system can cause problems with emotional dulling and is more apt to lead to poop-out than some of the other antidepressant classes. Paxil actually is fairly powerful in absolute terms in its effect on norepinephrine, but it is ridiculously powerful on serotonin. I think both of these effects together are the major reason for its efficacy for SAD.I take Nardil mainly for depression and also for social phobia. I can't say that I really have general social anxiety disorder, but I have more of a phobia that appears in certain situations and can be most dreadful. As I indicated in my previous post, one of the reasons I was more interested in Nardil than Parnate was because Nardil DOES HAVE sexual side effects, specifically, delayed or absent orgasm (The delay was what I was interested in). If you are looking for an MAOI with little or no sexual side effects, Parnate is the one to go with. It is also clearly more activating than Nardil, as Parnate's molecular structure is somewhat amphetamine-like, providing a noticeable direct stimulant effect in addition to all of its basic MAOI properties.
