I read this article on how Nortrytiline was a more effective antidepressant for post stroke depression than the ssri. Apparently prozac was no more effective than placebo. This makes me think that maybe nortrytiline might really help with cognition;if it works for stroke victims.I would be great to know peoples exprience with this drug

Nortriptyline has not caused any cognitive problems for me. I suppose people who are highly sensitive to anticholinergic effects might have some memory problems, but it has not caused any problems for me and I do not believe that it commonly does so. SSRI's are in my opinion more likely to cause 'brain fog.'

I didn't ask if it CAUSED cognitive problems but if it helped them, but it sounds like from your description it doesn't HURT cognition and thats a start.

Well, it is somewhat effective for ADD, which is a cognitive problem (among other things), so in that sense you can say it has helped my cognition. I'm assuming you have ADD from your name. Yes, it can help with ADD, but I am planning to try a stimulant along with it because I lack energy and am still inattentive, although no longer to the extent where locking myself out of my apartment is a regular occurence.:)

Nortriptyline significantly enhanched (brought it a little more towards normality) cognition in me. But everyone is different. For example, Amitriptyline produces just mild to no dry mouth for me, while others complained about a dust dry mount...
Nortriptyline absolutely has not the cognitive difficulties like the SSRIs are causing for me. This stuff is useful and pleasant.Roland

I'm not quite sure if I have ADD although it's a possibility. I certainly have depression induced psuedo dementia which I guess is ADD to the most debilitating degree.Basically I am just trying to figure out the best options for myself.I've explained more about all my symptoms further down the screen if you want to take a look

I'd like to try Nortriptyline myself in combination with Effexor. Hi dose Effexor give me an energy boost, but it destroys my cognitive ability. Ideally I'd like to reduce my Effexor down from 225 to 150mg & take a full dose of Nortriptyline, but my pdoc claims all TCA's are worse than SSRI's for cognitive abilities, probably based on M1 blockade. My bowels could withstand some M1 blockade too as they nearly always move too fast.
Cheers,
Panda.
