Stomach spasms - buspar

Posted by lilj on June 9, 2004, at 18:30:27

Has anyone had any problems with stomach related anxiety? I've tried wellbutrin and lexapro, but don't feel I suffer from depression - mostly anxiety and minor panic attacks here and there -- the only thing I've ever found to help my stomach spasms when they happen is Xanax, but as everyone knows, doctors don't like to prescribe it... Any thoughts on buspar??

Buspar did not help me with my digestive-system manifestations of anxiety. Klonopin did, and your doctor might be more willing to prescribe this one.

Another type of med to consider if you are having pain in your GI tract would be a TCA. The GI specialist I went to told me he prescribes 10 mg amitriptyline to his patients who have problems with their upper GI tract (nausea, uncomfortable feelings of 'fullness', etc.) and I can attest to the fact that when I started nortriptyline (closely related to ami) at 20 mg (well below antidepressant dosage) it worked as a fantastic analgesic, anti-nauseant and it has anti-panic properties too.

Thanks for the response - I'm trying buspar with Xanax when needed. The Xanax has completely helped in the past but doctors are so hessitant to prescribe it. We'll see how it goes.

I get stomach related anxiety which takes the form of amazing amounts of butterflies which actually hurt and cause agitation within the whole body.

Do you get that too.

Hi, I dont know if this is what you're describing, but for years I used to get really bad stomach spasms. Sometimes they were so unbearable that I couldnt move, i just be fixed to a point in agony. I tried all sorts, thought I had some kind of dairy allergy, all different stuff! Now I realise it was all anxiety. Im on Efexor (for depression really, but it helps with the anxiety I think) but the thing that helps me if I ever get those stomach spasms is...wait for it...peppermint!! Yes really.

Have you ever tried it? It might be Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is diagnosed by basically just ruling everything else it could be out. And honestly, just basic peppermint is a godsend for me! I take it, and literally in minutes I can just feel it calming everything down. It really is heavenly! hehe. The stuff I take is called Mintec, but Colperman (maybe spelt wrong) is good too.

Im sorry if Iv read things wrong and its actually something which requires stronger medication (i remember reading something about Xanax) but I thought id mention this just incase it works for you. If it does, its quite nice to just have something fairly natural you can take when the spasm come along!

anyway good luck! xx

I've never tried peppermint - but I will now. I don't have IBS - but it might work anyway. My problems are completely upper GI. At one point they gave me belladona (sp.) but that has phenobarbital (sp?) in it and thats scarry stuff. It didn't work anyway, so I got off it. The biggiest thing I have to worry about is when it gets bad, I will actually thow-up for hours on end, so the mild seditive action of a xanax just calms it all. I did find a doctor that gave me buspar and xanax to try, hopefully that will help, but I think I'm going to try the peppermint too, thanks for the advice.
