medication resistant--help

I am 44, female. I have had depression and anxiety for over three years now. I might have had it most of my life but I have the symptoms now. I've been just about all the SSRI's. I had 9 shock treatments( which didn't work) I had a vagul nerve stimulator placed in me for my seizure disorder, however, it malfunctioned and had it removed. So with a seizure disorder makes treating my a bit diffucult. Everyday is a struggle. I put on a fake front, smile- laugh, when I am dying inside. I see a councelor, it really doennt help. But I go to vent, at least they will hear my problems. I walk alot, trying to increase endorphines. Nothing has helped. I am currently on zoloph 100 mg. and Lamictal 600mg day. I take benzo's for anxiety, it doesnt work. THe anxiety, stomach upset, nausea are there constantly. My dr. doesn't know what to do either. I need help and support. Please respond I feel so alone.

Hello!

You may feel alone, but rest assured that you are not. There are so many of us (people suffering with anxiety and depression) that it's nice that we have a board like this to come to. I know exactly what you mean when you say that you smile and put up a front when you feel like you're dying inside. It is awful to have to go through the motions each day when all you really want to do is go home, crawl into bed and not have to deal with anything. (I always wanted to do that...but between my job and child I've had very little opportunity to hide under the covers so I just had to suffer.)

I really wanted to offer you some encouragement to keep on trying different medications and combinations, and to take comfort in knowing that drug manufacturers have some many new medications in different phases of testing that we've not even been able to try yet. You may even want to try getting a second opinion from a different physician who may have some different ideas.

We have to hang in together, sis!

Hi gingee,

It sounds like you have a complicated medical condition. I do too, and sometimes I feel very alone because of it. (I have a brain tumor which causes a bunch of problems.) Charm posted a very nice message that should also help.

What kind of seizures do you have? If you don't feel comfortable telling, then please don't. If at all possible I would suggest seeing a neuropsychiatrist. They can help with seizure disorders associate with psychiatric problems.

Also I remember reading about an expert in epileptic psychiatric disorders, who seemed to think that a combination of two antidepressants--an older tricyclic antidepressant and a newer SSRI like Zoloft. Do a search for "interictal dysphoric disorder" and you should find some related information.

I suggest you talk to your doctor about adding an older TCA (tricyclic) antidepressant. I have not personally tried this, as my symptoms are very different, but it is worth a shot.

Don't be hard on yourself about this problem--it is not your fault.

One of the MAOIs, such as Nardil or Parnate, should help. You may need a psychiatrist who is familiar with "lesser known" methods of treatment. With an adequate trial (time and dosage), one of these drugs may be just what you are looking for.
I hope you feel better soon.
