Effexor XR

Posted by Possibility on May 27, 2004, at 19:38:11

I Just got the prescription for Effexor XR. Mini background: Suicidal as a teen and early adult. I was very stubborn when it came to meds and thought that I could fix it myself. Spiritually or something, I don't know. I feel somehow defeated learning that this is not going to be the case.
Wondering if going on meds is a good idea. I'm hearing mixed reviews. I guess Im asking the same as others. Does it work? What should I expect? And is it possible to fix seemingly psychological problems using a chemical antedote? I'm sure there's much I just don't understand about the mechanics of the brain. I just want to feel free of the anxiety/panic/depression.

I would not recommend Effexor just because of the awful withdrawal effects i have experienced. If for some reason, say adverse side effects, you have to discontinue use, withdrawal is horrible. Also, my husband committed suicide 3 years ago after just starting on a low dose of effexor...so be careful. I am not sure if i blame the drug for his decision, but i know if he felt any of the effects i have read about here or experienced myself trying to get off it...i would say it played a role in his state of mind.

I have had tremendous success on Effexor xr, it is the 13th med I have tried and I love it. The s/e for me are not that bad, dry mouth, some nausea, but the good of the drug totally outweighs the bad. good luck

I take Effexor, it's great for getting rid of suicidal tendencies, feelings of guilt & worthlessness. The downside is it's short half life makes it difficult to withdraw from, but switching to Prozac during withdrawl can make it easier. You probably won't be withdrawing any time soon so I don't really see it as a major problem. A small percentage of people (less than 10%) are rapid metabolisers of certain drugs & this minority no doubt have enourmous difficulty getting off Effexor, but they would also have similar difficulties with other drugs such as Paxil & Codiene.

Cheers,
Panda.

Zoloft worked better for me than Effexor XR.

The effects ( having tried both) are similiar...but Zoloft did not cause me the agitation that EFFEXOR did....and Zoloft seems better suited for Anxiety, Phobia's and GAD.

I am probabley biased however...since EFFEXOR XR was so tough for me to discontinue. But as PANDA
said....you are starting..not ending, so thats
not a concern for you right now.

Keep us posted

Hi Possibility -

I'm currently taking Effexor. I switched to it from Remeron.

I didn't notice much change from the Remeron until my pdoc added Zyprexa to the mix. I'm presently taking 150mg of Effexor with 7.5 mg of Zyprexa (I have to cut the 5mg in half, so I take a 5mg with an additional half tablet). This is the best combination I have taken in a while. I imagine that my physician will increase the doseage of one of the products during my next visit.

Fortunately for me, I've never had a withdrawal problem when switching from one antidepressant to another, and I've taken quite a few over the past twenty some odd years.

Here in Georgia, we currently have commercials going on where a law firm is trying to put together a class action suit against Zyprexa because they claim some people who have taken it have developed diabetes and pancreatitis. Because my depression without treatment can be severe, it is well worth the risk to me to continue with my treatment.

Good luck with it --- I hope it works as well for you as it has for me!

Charm
