How long before my Wellbutrin starts working?

Posted by holymama on May 6, 2004, at 18:50:26

I've started out on 50 mg Wellbutrin 5 days ago and going up to 100 mg in 2 more days. (I'm also decreasing my lexapro and my trileptal...so that in 6 weeks I will make a total switch to wellbutrin and also we will add lamictal).

I'm feeling pretty bad, in a depression, and am really waiting for some improvement. When I started lexapro I noticed positive effects within 48 hours. Not so with Wellbutrin, and am wondering how long it took for any of you to feel any positive effects and what those effects first felt like, so I will know what I am looking for.

Thanks for any input!!

Give it about 3 more weeks, to really feel the effects have it moved to 450mg Daily, you will start to feel the stimulating anit-depressant effect moderatly.

I started with just 150mg daily, for about 2 weeks, nothing was felt, a little stimulation, but not anything with antidepressant properties. I got moved to 300mg Daily about 4 weeks into it, and that was about the time i started to feel the effects.

Later i was moved to the max dose of 450mg Daily, the effects are effective, more energy and increased intrest in things, and more active daily things since it is a stimulant anti-depressant. But if you have an anxiety problem, this will also stimulate the anxiety.

If you do, and chose to still take wellbutrin, level it with a mild sedative, either another sedating antidepressant, or a benzodizepine such as Klonoplin, that works the best. Hope you feel better soon.

so what about in the meantime?

I am seriously depressed. I've been in touch with pdoc/therapist/hospitals today, trying to figure out what do do with myself. I don't think I can wait 3 weeks to feel better. I have never been this depressed and it is kind of suicidal and i keep getting these waves of sadness/panic/grief that make me weep. I'm not functioning well with caring for 3 children.

Any advice will help. I realized how alone I am in this fight against my depression, like a battle of me against demons in my brain. I'm having a hard time figuring out what to do next.

Thanks.

Hi:
First, Wellbutrin SR is NOT a good anti-depressant if your depression is 'severe' form. This med., W.B. is most likely used for 'ADD' rather than anti-depressant,.... at least in my case, BP II with ultra rapid cycler.
For my depression that is quite 'severe,' I've been on 5 mg. Zyprexa, Lithium along with Serzone/Nefadozone. Lithium and Serzone both have A.D. effect, but not quite strong enough to alleviate my depression, ... then Zyprexa seems 'augument' to those two meds.

The reason why I am on W.B. is my ADD that seems coming from or partly the depressive side of Bp. All those four meds. I need to alleviate my symptoms and so far so good.

In my suggestion, you should NOT wait that long, two or three wks.(?) to see the pdoc. You need to call as for 'Emergency Basis,' because 'suicidal thoughts' is regard to E.R. /immediate attention.
H.G.
