I wanted to find out if other people experienced edema swelling of the knees and ankles on Nardil? My sister takes it and has not problems but as a guy I had that reaction. It seemed to elivate the depression more that the SSRi's. Now I am on Zoloft and it does not see to be as effective as nardil. They have changed the formulation of Nardil and I wondered if that would affect the side effects. Does anyone know?
Thanks

I have heard of this. But never has been a problem for me. I have put on weight but.

You mean 'alleviate'. MAOIs are much better than SSRIs in my opinion.

No suprise. Zoloft would have to take the prize for the most weakest anti depressive, anti-OCD, anti-anxiety. Zoloft also has a very bad w/drawal for some folk.

I would go back on it regardless. I have heard many complain about the new formula, but for some it is fine. But I really hope the FDA rectifies this problem. It seems the most simple thing to do would be return to the old formula.

I occasionally get mildly swollen ankles on 45-60 mg of Nardil.

I think this is very much dependent on the individual and how susceptible they are to edema. I am now up to 90 mg/day of Nardil and have not experienced this but have never experienced edema on any other AD, anti-hypertensive, or at any other point in my life, either. I have a referencehttp://www.vh.org/adult/provider/psychiatry/CPS/19.html
(if that link doesn't work, sorry, I am at home on my primitive webtv and have a harder time with posting links)
In the paper, they do a couple different comparisons of edema:
Placebo (n = 43)...... 0%
Imipramine (n = 65)... 0%
Nardil (n = 141)...... 8%
Parnate (n = 41)...... 2%Nardil 60 mg/day for six weeks.......... 5%
Amitriptyline 150 mg/day for six weeks.. 20%

All the side effects are worth it for me, the hardest one to deal with for me was weight gain, but after awhile I learned how to control the foods I was eating better... so I have been able to maintain the same weight for awhile

> ToddThanks for the link it is really helpful I tried Parnate a year ago and got so sick on the second day of taking it I had to go off of it. My Doctor said starting out on less than 15Mg might help my body adapt to it. Dont know if other experienced that or not? Seems like a lot of people like Nardil better!

No, it's really not that bad. Just notice some sock marks that take awhile to go away. Or my watch gets too tight. (not on my ankle, or course, but on my wrist). I did find that when I was also taking Mobic, an anti-inflammatory, for some joint pain, it was a bit worse.
Sounds like yours is worse than mine?
