I know there have been many theories on this, but what has worked or is thought to work? What are your experiences with stimulant holidays or taking other medications/supplements to prevent tolerance? I mean by stimulant - Adderall and Dexedrine.

It is quite simple, your brain needs down time.
There is no way to sustain the effects you get on the first time you use these medications except to take hollidays.

I have seen posts here, which I can't find, where people have said that some pills may work. Forgive my ignorance, but is there a way to restore the brain without a holiday. I have taken holidays and they work, but I never know if I need a holiday or if I need to up the dosage of my medication.

Perhaps you were thinking of memantine?

I think there have been other's mentioned? Is this memantine worth looking into? What have been people's experiences taking it? Is it a success or failure? Any side effects? Also, is this something a psychiatrist would prescribe? Any clinical studies of this being used in conjunction with stimulants? Any thoughts? Thanks!

I would say yes. One person here once used it to prevent tolerance to Adderall. He reported success. I am currently conducting a trial of memantine. It has shown some encouraging signs of working for my bipolar depression. I am currently taking:
imipramine 300mg
Zoloft 200mg
Lamictal 300mg
Abilify 10mg
memantine 20mgI don't feel that I have experienced any side effects from memantine adding to those I already had from the other drugs.

I know some people will use 12 hr. sudafed as a holiday drug. I don't take stims, but I know I feel good for a few days taking sudafed. Tolerance develops to that though just like your stims. Bouncing back and forth may actually work out though.

hi all, from chemist....memantine is on my radar in one of my research areas....no surprise that it is a ``holiday pill'' in that it is an anti-parkinsonian derivative of adamantine, which binds quite nicely to neuronal nicotine receptors and also initiates dopamine cascade, as the stimulants do.....all the best, chemist
