Lexapro and headaches?

Posted by Scott in Vermont on April 16, 2004, at 9:51:23

I'm past my 2 week mark, and while I can say I find a lot of things easier to deal with, I'm getting really annoyed with this headache.

Some of it is jaw clenching, maybe all of it? I don't know. Has anyone else had this experience? This headache has lasted since Sunday.

Yes, yes, I know... call my pdoc. I'm worried that he might tell me to stop taking the Lexapro, or reduce the dose. Right now I'm feeling a lot better about things and I don't want to mess with this since it's doing what I want it to do (classic Vermonter- if it ain't broke, don't fix it)

Also, if anyone has experience with this and had something that STOPPED it (over the counter preferred) I would be incredibly happy for that info.

As always, all replies read and appreciated.

-Scott

I was on Zoloft up and down from 50 mg to 200 mg. Not good!. Doctor changed me to Lexapro 50 mg (which controls weight better anyway) and I am feeling much better. I do still take Zanac whenever I feel aniety and I take Tranzadone at night because I was having sleep nightmares. The doctor said it was because I wasn't sleeping deep enough. He said no chance of getting hooked on Trazadone either. Tranzadone works great. Only take if I need to. It dosen't knock you out, you just don't remember falling asleep. You can also get up in the middle of the night without falling down if needed. I am feeling so much better now. More positive...and I was pretty far down. I have alot of stress going on in my life, but I'm able to handle it now...at least better than before. I know everyone is different and you need to keep that in mind. When I was on Zoloft 200mg, I had the worst foot twitching than you could possibily imagine. Life is getting so much better now. I get headaches, but they are sinus related. I do get a stiff neck, but I think that is stress related. Trying to think positive has helped. If what you are trying doesn't help, try something else. It will get better. Do not give up!

I have chronic headaches and find ibuprofen to work the best of the OTC meds I've tried.

If you're looking for something stronger and are willing to take another prescription med, the tricyclic AD nortriptyline is quite effective. It also has antidepressant properties (rather different from those of the Lexapro), is quite cheap, but is also somewhat sedating--it is generally taken at bedtime.

King- Thank you. Ibuprofen. Got it. It's on my "get as soon as you leave work" list for tonight.

Pooka- I'm staying with the Lexapro. The headaches are annoying, but the other effects (re: the things it is supposed to be doing) are decent and even though it's still a bit early, I'm hoping I've found where I'm supposed to be.

Pooka - Are you sure you're taking Lexapro at 50mg/day? That's 2 1/2 times higher than its upper limit, I believe.

Hi Scott,

I'm on 20 mgs of Lexapro and haven't encountered any serious headaches, none that stuck around for very long. If your headaches are caused by jaw clenching you could probably go see your dentist about getting a mouth guard. A mouth guard prevents people from grinding their teeth/jaw clenching.

Scott,
I remember having terrible headaches and ear pain the first month I started Lexapro. I think this was all caused by jaw clenching. Mine went away between the 4-5 week.

Scott - I had headaches and jaw clenching starting Lexapro too. It went away after a month or two. Also had excessive armpit sweating that went away too. My sisters and I had all three of these side effects. But we kept with it and the Lexapro helped.
For me, I was amazed how my anger vanished. I had no idea how angry I was. One guy at work had the key/change dangling in his pocket noise. Just hearing him coming down the hallway would make me ill. After the Lexapro, it was like whatever...........

Good luck.

Thanks to all for the personal experiences and the encouragement. I "feel" like the Lexapro is working (this weekend provided me with quite a test) and the headaches are less when I take ibuprofen.

Again, thanks to all. I really appreciate the support and the personal stories. Reading dry clinical text is ok, but hearing it from a real person who knows what it feels like and made it through this is much comforting.
