Klonopin and coffee, counterproductive?

Posted by pseudonym on April 10, 2004, at 20:29:48

Basically, should caffeine be avoided while on a benzo? Has anyone had good results for social anxiety with this combination? I like coffee, and drink it once a day. Caffeine, however, seems to make the klonopin less effective in that it takes more K in order to achieve the same level of anxiety relief. Unfortunately, social anxiety sufferers often require dopaminergic augmentation.

I have never heard that caffeine and benzo's are mutually exclusive. I know that caffeine stimulates some of us anxiety types and I know that benzo's are system depressants; but if you're not one that caffeine sets off without a benzo I doubt that taking the benzo would make any difference.

You might consider expresso (1/3 the caffeine of drip coffee) or even green tea (1/3 of expresso)as alternates. Green tea has other antioxidant benefits as well.

My pdoc told me to drink coffee to counter the effect of Klonopin sedation. Caffeine is not anxiogenic for me except when it causes insomnia. Besides social phobia, I also have ADD, and caffeine helps the concentration a little. Caffeine is the only stimulant I can get my hands on, so I've been forced to use it in lieu of more effective stims (I take Strattera, but that does nothing for the fatigue). I am looking forward to seeing some adenosine-receptor antagonists/MAO-B inhibitors developed, which will be a major step up from run of the mill java in every way.
