Lexapro, Adderall heart murmur

Posted by libjennifer on April 1, 2004, at 13:24:21

I've been taking Lexapro for about a year now for anxiety and depression, and the Lexarpo has been great for anxiety. However, lately I've felt the same lack of motivation, emotion, and flatness that almost always occurs on the SSRI's after a while. My doctor has suggested a low dose of Adderall to increase my energy and concentration, however, I have a heart murmur. My pharmacist seemed alarmed by this combination and I called the doctor to ask him about this. He basically said not to worry about it, especially at at a low dose of 5 mgs a day.

Does anyone have any experience with this combination? if I try 5 mgs tomorrow morning, am I going to keel over? is there another stimulant that I could try that isn't quite as harsh as the amphetamines? I've taken Wellbutrin in the past and had severe anxiety as a result. I suggested Strattera to my doctor, but he shot that down right away.

Any advice is appreciated!

hey libjennifer, I have taken lex before but not w/ adderall. I have taken wellbutrin also and it caused me significant jittery feelings so I quit it.. The adderall was great but I tended to take more than prescribed-- I also do not have a heart murmer, but I can tell you that 5mg of adderall is very low dose and your doc probably feels comfortable in prescribing this to you based on your age and body weight etc. Generally adderall is one of the smoothest stims / amphetamines on the market. If it does cause you any problems that are very disturbing to you just call your doc- the good news is that adderall (not adderall XR) has a pretty limited half life so I would bet you will be fine and no I don't think you'll die!! I know it is scary to think about that-given your heart condition -so if it does cause any problems you can D/C it quickly and you and your doc can find a more effective remedy!
Good Luck

Thanks so much for your posts, crazychickuk and snapper! I don't have a cardiologist, just an internist. I'm going to try taking just 2.5 mgs tomorrow and see how that is.
